Be a Guest on a Podcast

Podcast guesting is a great way to get yourself in front of new people. It's also awesome because the length of the format allows you to go deeper on what you do - and show your personality.

Guesting is great to bring people into your world. It's a great step to introduce people to what you do and yourself. I mostly think of it as a tool to fill the funnel and find leads, if you want to use marketing speak.

I love podcasts! I've been a guest on a lot of them and I have my own solo show. To me, it's so rewarding to have a 1-hour-long conversation with somebody, get to know them on a deeper level, and exchange ideas.

That's where marketing is fun for me and I'll choose it over making content on socials every day. That one hour I spend talking to somebody on a podcast is rejuvenating for me. And so easy and fun - exactly how all our marketing should be.

How To Do It

1. Research Shows

Find your shows! Write down the ones you like and know already. Then go deeper with the sites I'm sharing below and the podcast apps you use on your devices.

You can start with a step as easy as looking at different categories in the app or "business podcast". What you look for depends on your niche and where the biggest potential to get in front of the right people is. You should be the right person for the podcast, audience, and interviewer in the same way that they should be a good fit for you.

2. Make a list of podcasts to reach out to:

I'm all about efficiency at work. I like to take the path of least resistance in my work. The best way to do this is a research deep dive once and make a list of shows to reach out to. If you're new to podcasting, it helps to build rapport and practice your podcast guesting on newer or friends' shows first. Then begin pitching the bigger, more established ones.

3. Reach out:

The best part about a podcast list is that you can chip away at it a little bit every day. There was a time, when I challenged myself to send a pitch every working day to get traction. The more often you do it, the easier it becomes.

4. Follow up:

People are busy! If you don't get a reply or hear back after you sent your first pitch, follow up once after a sensible (!) period of time.

What to put into a podcast pitch:

• Why you want to be on their show. Start with a compliment. Tell them why them. So many shows get a deluge of messages about guesting that are copy-paste and generic. Avoid this.
• Tell them "why you" and an angle you can add to their show. It also shows that you care about their community.
• Give them brief information about you and where they can find out more about your work.
• If you've been a guest before, you can also include a sample link to an episode you've been on that you like.

Pro tip:

It helps to have a template of the sections of your post that always stay the same like your bio and the angle you can add for the community.

• ​Matchmaker.fm connects podcasts and guests. You can search for podcasts on there, pitch yourself to a host, and make a profile so hosts can find you (saves you work!).
• ​Audry is a community for podcasters - and a great place for show research.
