Yes, the IRS is hiring criminal investigators that can use deadly force. But here's some context.
MarketWatch (Center) • Factual Grade 78% • 4 min read

More than half of the $80 billion in supplemental funding in the Inflation Reduction Act [which is likely to pass this House soon] would be earmarked for more tax compliance enforcement. Administration officials have pledged that the extra enforcement will not be directed at households making less than $400,000.

[The estimated 87,000 new employees] would be part of a multi-year plan and it would encompass extra auditors plus an array of other jobs as workers left or retired. IRS ranks have been shrinking over the years. As the agency’s workforce has decreased, so has the audit rate among all income levels. The decrease is especially sharp for higher earners.
    ...
There’s an online stir over job postings for special agents who have to carry guns as part of their work with the IRS’ Criminal Investigation division. Requiring some IRS special agents to potentially use deadly force is nothing new, an IRS spokeswoman said. The criminal investigation division includes 3,000 employees.
  1. Different political viewpoint
IRS controversially claims hiring 87,000 new agents won't mean higher audit rate for the middle class.

Should tech companies make end-to-end encryption a default messaging feature?

Context: Mother, daughter charged for abortion-related crime after police obtain Facebook messages.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - First, even if E2EE was the default on messaging services, there are a bajillion other things you do online that reveal things about you that can be useful to law enforcement. Second, dedicated criminals and terrorists are already using E2EE as well and more advanced tools, so making it the default wouldn't exactly encourage much. Making it the default really just gives the average person more privacy in their personal communications -- I fail to see how that's a bad thing. A huge amount of personal communication has moved online, so a search warrant that lets police read your chat history is far more sweeping than when a search warrant would let police open your mail.

Unsure - Messaging services can choose how they want to set up their platform. I’m not one to say that mes...
