Alaska elected a Democrat to Congress for the first time in 50 years.

Former state Rep. Mary Peltola defeated two opponents with better funding and recognition [former Gov. Sarah Palin and Nick Begich, both Republicans] to become the next member of Congress from the state. She will be the first Democrat elected to that seat in nearly 50 years. She is also the first Native Alaskan to represent the state in Congress.
    ...
This was the first election cycle since Alaska switched to a new voting system using ranked choice voting on the general election ballot. Instead of selecting a single candidate, voters rank candidates by preference; if no candidate wins an outright majority, then the lowest performer is eliminated, and that candidate's votes are tallied again with their second choice counted first.
    ...
Peltola won the first round of voting, but Palin and Begich [had nearly 60% of the vote combined]. Only half of Begich's voters picked Palin as their second choice: Nearly three out of ten chose Peltola second. After all second choices were counted, Peltola prevailed over Palin, 52-49.

Should states be allowed to import prescription drugs?

417 votes, 42 comments

Context: Florida sues FDA over delays in the approval of its plan to import drugs from Canada.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - If the quality is equivalent, and if prices are lower, I say yes. But those two conditions are non-negotiable. I have felt that drug companies have been gouging American consumers for decades, using higher domestic prices to offer discounts abroad. Such practices have to stop, and if allowing competition in that business sector can accomplish that, so be it.

Unsure - Why are we importing the same drugs from another country instead of...

No - Allowing 50 different states to setup their own rules and regs for importation from Canada seems like a ...
