In Idaho, District Judge B. Lynn Winmill agreed with the Department of Justice that the abortion ban taking effect Thursday conflicts with a federal law that ensures patients can receive emergency "stabilizing care." The Justice Department has said the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act requires abortion care in emergency situations.
    ...
District Judge James Wesley Hendrix ruled in the Texas case that the Department of Health and Human Services went too far by issuing guidance that the same federal law guaranteed abortion care. Hendrix, [a Trump appointee], said the federal statute was silent as to what a doctor should do when there is a conflict between the health of the mother and the unborn child and that the Texas law "fills that void."

Appeals are expected in both cases and would be heard by separate courts, one with a [liberal reputation] and another known for conservative rulings. Experts said [if the Idaho and Texas rulings are upheld on appeal] the Supreme Court [could be forced] to wade back into the debate.

Do you agree with President Biden's student debt cancellation?

803 votes, 162 comments

Context: Biden administration policy will forgive $10,000 in debt for most federal student loan borrowers.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I don't agree with it, but at a cost of [$300 billion], see it as a drop in the bucket of taxation and wealth transfers that don't make sense, so I can't get too excited about it. The problem is we still have an abundance of arrogant and economically clueless education administrators who will still raise tuition and fees at multiples of the rate of inflation, while building up their endowments and pummeling their alumni for donations. They're insatiable, and debt forgiveness rewards them.

Yes - The most common argument I hear against student debt cancellation is that it's not fair to people who already paid for college. I can see that argument if ...

Unsure - I believe that making student loans interest free is better and addresses the long term problem of student loan debt. ...
