What does the latest jobs report indicate about the U.S. economy?

Lower US job gain in August could aid Fed’s inflation fight.

Friday’s report from the government showed that the unemployment rate rose to 3.7%, up from a half-century low of 3.5%. Yet that increase was also an encouraging sign: It reflected a long-awaited rise in the number of Americans who are looking for work.
    ...
Wage growth weakened a bit last month, too, which could also serve the Fed’s inflation fight. Average hourly pay rose 0.3% from the previous month, the smallest gain since April. “[The report] still holds open the possibility for a soft landing,” said economist Ellen Gaske, referring to the Fed’s goal of slowing the economy enough to cool inflation without going so far as to cause a recession.
    ...
Recent data has painted a conflicting picture of the economy. The broadest measure of the economy’s output — gross domestic product — has shrunk for two straight quarters, meeting one informal definition of a recession. Yet another measure, focused on incomes, indicates the economy expanded in the first half of the year, albeit slowly.
  1. Different political viewpoint
US job growth moderates in August with 315,000 added while unemployment edges higher.

Do you support the use of ranked-choice voting?

708 votes, 79 comments

Context: Alaska elects its first Democrat to the House in decades, first use of new ranked-choice voting system.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - RCV is a far more democratic way to select our elected officials. In the first past the post system, money speaks incredibly loud - more ad buys, more ability to drown out your opponents, and you only need to get a few more votes than your competitors in order to win, so you only need to win 30% of the votes in your district to get elected. [...] RCV solves that problem by making it so that you have to get over half the votes, meaning half of your district has to support you in some way. By ranking candidates, people can choose the candidate they actually want without fear that their votes will be wasted. FPTP encourages big tents and voters compromising their beliefs in order to pick the "lesser evil" because otherwise their vote will be wasted; RCV encourages candidates that have diverse and nuanced positions to remain viable.
