Average hourly pay rose 0.3% from the previous month, the smallest gain since April. “[The report] still holds open the possibility for a soft landing,” said economist Ellen Gaske, referring to the Fed’s goal of slowing the economy enough to cool inflation without going so far as to cause a recession.

The broadest measure of the economy’s output — gross domestic product — has shrunk for two straight quarters, meeting one informal definition of a recession. Yet another measure, focused on incomes, indicates the economy expanded in the first half of the year, albeit slowly.

In the first past the post system, money speaks incredibly loud - more ad buys, more ability to drown out your opponents, and you only need to get a few more votes than your competitors in order to win, so you only need to win 30% of the votes in your district to get elected.
