Swipe Files - 📂 How to double your Twitter followers

Today's newsletter is proudly supported by The Juice 🙌

You're gonna love this... The Juice is essentially Spotify for marketing & sales content. If you're anything like me and you can't get enough blog posts, podcasts, case studies, videos, and ebooks on marketing, look no further.

I'm partnering with them to aggregate all Swipe Files content to concurrently live on The Juice platform, and if you're creating content for your company, you should too. I have three(ish) words for you: built-in distribution.

And if you're a marketing nerd like me, go create a free account and start exploring their already massive library to take your marketing game to the next level.

🤔 Why grow your following?

Get clear about this for yourself, but here’s my thinking. Follower count is mostly vanity, but there are many downstream effects:

  • Domain authority
  • Inbound referrals, requests, and new opportunities
  • Newsletter subscribers, leads, and customers
  • Making friends!
  • ✨ Serendipity ✨

📚 Basics

Have a good bio. People should understand right away why they should follow you and what to expect if they do. Basic info about who you are and why they should follow you.

  • Use a high-res profile picture.
  • Use your full name instead of a pseudonym or abbreviated version.
  • Link to your personal/business site or newsletter.
  • Pin a popular tweet to your profile that gives people a taste of the content you create. This acts as social proof and a first impression of why someone should follow you.

Choose a specific topic and stick to it. People need to know what to expect. Having a clear niche will make it an easier decision to follow you. Random tweets about things outside of what you originally promised will break the trust you’ve built and cause follower churn. 90% of your content should be related to your main niche and 10% can deviate from it.

🤝 Engage

Look for “influencers” in your niche: anyone who already has the attention of the people you also want to create content for. Follow them and start interacting with them. Ask questions, leave thoughtful comments, respond to other comments.

💡 Use a tool like SparkToro to find these accounts.

💡 Activate the notifications for every tweet of these influencers so you can jump in the comments. Use CrowdFox to ramp up engagement.

Friends

Like, comment, and retweet accounts with smaller or similar size following as you (but only retweet if the tweet fits in your content strategy for your niche). Amplify them and they’ll amplify you. Send a nice DM to introduce yourself and ask if there’s anything you can do to help. Likes are free, so give them away like there’s no tomorrow. Make sure all your comments are valuable.

💡 Make a List and review it every day so you make sure to engage with friends.

💡 Use TweetDeck to stay on top of what's happening. (Example)

Followers

When people comment on your tweets or quote retweet you, RESPOND. Thank them, start a dialogue, like their tweets, give them a follow. You want to publicly encourage people to engage with you and show that it’s appreciated.

✍️ Create

Cadence

Commit to tweeting at least 1x/day during the workweek. 5 high-quality tweets/threads per week are better than 25 low-quality tweets per week. Still, you need to tweet often to experiment and see what hits.

💡 Use a tool like Habitify or Streaks to build momentum.

💡 All it takes is one viral tweet/thread to double your followers. Go for efficiency rather than frequency.

Threads

Threads are the best way to gain exposure to new audiences and get discovered since they’re highly sharable.

  • First Tweet = Headline
  • Body = Context/Story
  • CTA = CTA to follow/click

Each tweet in a thread should be a self-contained thought. Make it punchy, concise, and easy to read.

💡 Use a thread builder like Typefully to plan and schedule ahead of time.

💡 Study the Readwise Twitter Leaderboard. 💡 Use Hemingway to improve your writing.

Ideas for content

  • Quotes from books
  • Studies/anecdotes from books
  • Curate lists of people, resources, tools, or examples
  • Summarize articles
  • Share clips of YouTube videos or podcast interviews
  • Step-by-step guides
  • Personal stories and experiences
  • Ask a question
  • Ask for a recommendation
  • Ask for feedback
  • Tweet about something in the news (related to your niche)
  • Tweet about something controversial going on in your niche
  • Build in public
  • Learn in public
  • Memes, gifs, and jokes
  • Visual explanations
  • Share long-form writing in an image
  • What do people often ask you about?
  • Explain basic concepts in your niche
  • Teardowns
  • Analysis
  • Google keyword research
  • What do you know about that most other people don’t know about?
  • Go back to old tweets that performed well, reword/improve, then post again

💡 Use Tweet Ideas, What to Tweet, or Copy.ai to brainstorm.

💡 Make text more visually appealing with Typeshare.

💡 Use Keywords Everywhere or Ubersuggest to see what topics people are searching for.
