⚾️ MLB: The chase is on

The GIST: With the MLB regular season finale just two (!!!) weeks away, it’s time to check up on the squads hunting for a spot in the newly expanded postseason field. Batter up!
How it works: Up from 10 in prior years, 12 of MLB’s 30 teams (six from the American League and six from the National League) will make the playoffs this season — the three divisional winners, plus three Wild Cards (WCs). The more the merrier, right?
American League (AL): The Houston Asterisks Astros locked up their fifth AL West title in the last six years on Monday and the NY Yankees — who boast soon-to-be record-setting slugger Aaron Judge and a five-game lead in the AL East — should be the next to clinch their division.
- But the AL Central is much tighter — the Cleveland Guardians are five games ahead of the Chicago White Sox, and even more interesting, these two contenders are in the midst of a three-game series against each other. That top spot is anyone’s for the taking.
- As for those coveted WCs, the Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners are currently holding it down, but the Baltimore Orioles are still hoping to fly up the standings down the stretch.
National League (NL): Stop us if you heard this one before, but the LA Dodgers are (currently) the best team in baseball — they were the first to clinch their division (NL West) and the first (and so far only) team to reach 100 wins this season.
- The other shining star in the NL? St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Albert Pujols. His Cards should lock up the NL Central soon as the baseball legend’s quest for 700 career home runs continues.
- The most exciting divisional battle is undoubtedly the NL East, where the NY Mets have clinched a playoff berth but are desperately clinging to a two-game lead over the defending World Series champs, the Atlanta Braves. Cue the trumpets, because we’re in for a show.
- And whichever NL East team doesn’t claim the title would be joined in the WC field by superstar Juan Soto’s San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies, but not if the Milwaukee Brewers (who are two games back) have anything to say about it.
🏀 Women’s World Cup: The party has just begun

The GIST: Post–WNBA Finals blues hitting hard? Have no fear because the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup tips off today from Sydney, Australia, with one coveted spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics on the line. Crikey!
How it works: Twelve nations, 10 days, 38 games. The teams are split into two groups of six, where they’ll each play five round robin games. From there, the top four in each group advance to the quarter-finals, followed by the semis on September 30th and culminating with the championship game on October 1st. Mark your cal.
🇺🇸 Team USA: The Americans are contending for their fourth consecutive world title, but 2022 is a year of firsts — as in, it’s the first FIBA tournament since 2000 with neither Sue Bird nor Diana Taurasi on the team. *sniffs*
- And for the first time since 1994, the entire team is under 30 years old. The kids are certainly alright though, because Seattle Storm stars Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd are suiting up, plus A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum fresh off their W title with the Las Vegas Aces. Have mercy.
The other top contenders: Keep your eyes on the home team, Australia, currently ranked No. 3 in the world behind No. 2 Spain. And certainly don’t count out Bosnia and Herzegovina — their national team boasts one serious powerhouse in 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones.
What to watch: The fun begins tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET when the red, white and blue open play against Belgium. Unfortunately, they’ll likely be without the Aces stars, who are en route to Australia after yesterday’s festivities. Game on.
Mid-Week Watching |

🎓🏐 NCAA women’s volleyball: No. 1 Texas (8-0) vs. Kansas (10-2) — Tonight at 9 p.m. ET — ESPN2
- The undefeated Longhorns are the clear favorites, but it’s already been a year of upsets. Interest = spiked.
⚽ NWSL: Angel City FC vs. Washington Spirit — Tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET — Paramount+
- With just two match days remaining, seventh-place Angel City will attempt to move into postseason contention (reminder: the top six teams clinch) as they take on the already-eliminated Spirit.
🎓⚽ NCAA women’s soccer: No. 2 Virginia (8-0-1) vs. No. 17 Notre Dame (7-1-0) — Tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET — ACC Network
- Two top teams enter, but only can emerge victorious…barring a draw, of course. Getcha popcorn ready.
🏈 NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns — Tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. ET — Prime Video
- The field’s wide open in the AFC North, making this divisional battle between the struggling squads even more spicy. Will rookie Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett make his NFL debut? Can the Browns overcome the absence of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney? Only one way to find out.

We’re trying to level the playing field, but there’s at least one area where both men and women struggle: hair thinning. Did you know that women are just as likely as men to experience hair shedding?

Luckily, Nutrafol is working to fight thinning with their award-winning hair growth supplements. Treat your tresses today.

🎧 What to listen to
Yesterday’s episode of The GIST of It podcast, of course. Get your eye-roll workout in as co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz dive into a series of WTF moments, including Phoenix Mercury and Suns owner Robert Sarver’s paltry one-year suspension for racist and misogynistic behavior.
🏀 What’s changing
The NBA’s one-and-done rule. The league is expected to make the change in their next collective bargaining agreement, allowing players to declare for the draft at age 18 (right out of high school) instead of having to attend one year of college first.
🎾 What to (re)watch
Battle of the Sexes, the film depicting Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs’ famous match, which took place 49 years ago yesterday. Movie night plans, confirmed.
🏒 Who’s hanging up the skates
Former Montréal Canadiens defenseman P. K. Subban, Norris Cup–winning defenseman Zdeno Chara (who spent most of his career with the Boston Bruins) and NHL iron man Keith Yandle, who all announced their retirement from the NHL yesterday. End of an era.
💄 What to enter
This contest to win a beauty and wellness bundle worth over $2,000. Whether you’re getting ready for a night at the sports bar or an NWSL match, glow up with these products from female-founded brands. Yes, please.
