The most telling financial wellness stats

Last week we launched our second annual Ellevest Financial Wellness Survey. You may have seen some of the coverage of it. We learned a lot — some of which you may have expected (like inflation coming in as pretty much everyone’s top worry). Other findings, maybe not so much. Like:

Climate change is one of your top five financial concerns. So are reproductive rights, especially for young women — in fact, for Gen Z women, those two concerns tied at #2. (I had a journalist recently ask me if women “get” that climate and reproductive rights have financial implications. You sure do.)

You’re now three times more likely to think practicing financial wellness is critical than you were last year. (Proud of you.)

Half of you are worried about your job security. And half of you are looking for a new job. (That tracks.) Also, a third of you are saving up so that you can leave your current job. (Could this just be a temporary “let’s see what happens with the economy” pause in the Great Resignation?)

Only 36% of women are investing (which is definitely not enough). But when you do, you’re making all the right moves, like not withdrawing money from your accounts and not pausing your retirement contributions. (Btw, this is a key reason why women outperform men in investing.)

You want to get your life and your money aligned with your values. We get it. And, in particular, you want to work at a company whose views on reproductive rights align with yours. And to buy from and invest in companies that align too.

These results have notes of hope, but they also underscore what the Ellevest Women’s Financial Health Index is telling us: It’s rough out there. Really rough. And last week’s renewed talk of a possible recession definitely doesn’t help. (After all, only 14% of women said they felt prepared for one.)

But if I know the Ellevest community, I know you’re not about to stop fighting for every dollar you deserve to earn (and keep). And we’re here to help — below.

Q: What’s going on in the markets this week?

A: Tbh, nothing great. Yesterday, investor nerves about last week’s interest rate hikes — not just in the US, but in other countries too — sent the S&P 500 tumbling to its lowest level so far this year.

If you’re thinking, “sounds about right for 2022,” you’re not wrong. It’s been a prettttty bumpy one. Our advice, as ever: Try to ignore the news, keep investing regularly, and keep your eye on the long term.

For your next lunch break

“Today’s protests echo the decades of resistance led by women, both veiled and unveiled, against the hijab’s co-optation as a tool of repression since its imposition in the 1980s. This struggle is interlinked with similar struggles for women’s liberation globally. Whether fighting for the right to control our reproductive lives in the United States, the right to life without military occupation in Palestine or Kashmir, or the right to free speech in Saudi Arabia, women are left with few options but to rise up.” — Hoda Katebi, in a powerful opinion piece on the ongoing protests in Iran, for the Los Angeles Times.

Stefanie O’Connell Rodriguez asked single women what they wish others understood about their finances, and it’s very much worth a read.

“Yes, please.” — Millennials when you ask them if they want to retire in their 50s. But as our latest Financial Wellness Survey found (and The New York Times explores here), that feels a heck of a lot easier said than done.

Read or watch Sallie’s interview with Yahoo Finance Live on why inflation hurts women more, the Fed’s latest rate hike, and what that means for women’s financial health.

And finally, speaking of wellness: The folks at M.M.LaFleur put five popular self-care practices to the test, and we’re totally here for it.
