Penn State cancels Proud Boys founder's speech, citing the threat of violence.
NPR (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 80% • 4 min read

A conservative student group organized the event. A student-led group that considers requests to use student-derived funds for events approved the event. The committee says its policies require it to observe "viewpoint neutrality." Until [far-right figure Alex Stein walked to the protestors], Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi said, it had been a "peaceful protest."
    ...
Stein posted video footage online in which he sought to agitate the crowd — with success: one protester spat on his jacket. [45 minutes before the event's start time] the university said its police department deemed the event too dangerous to proceed. Videos from the scene show standoffs between protesters and supporters of [Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes].
    ...
"Some brave people were pepper sprayed by hate group members," said the student group which organized protests against the event. "It is unclear which individuals onsite resorted to physical confrontation and to using pepper spray against others, including against police," Bendapudi said. After the cancellation, the only people celebrating are the agitators, he said.

Should the US pursue direct talks with Russia for a cease-fire in Ukraine?

361 votes, 42 comments

Context: Progressive House Democrats send letter to Biden urging direct talks with Russia; letter was soon retracted.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - A huge part of Ukraine's war effort is bankrolled by the U.S., which means Ukraine has to take the U.S. stance into consideration. Meanwhile any escalation Russia does, it does with the world's other nuclear power in mind. It's also just moral to bring a negotiated end to this war, at this point the U.S. has no qualms about throwing away Ukrainian lives if it defeats Russia and Russia has no qualms about throwing away its own soldiers' lives or Ukrainian lives either. Millions are facing food insecurity in the world's poorest countries, there's a serious possibility of nuclear conflict, and we don't even know if Ukraine can win -- it's just not worth the risk.

No - The Ukrainians should not be required to give up any territory to Putin, and at present he has no willingness to cede any of the territory he's captured so far. The Ukrainians currently...

Unsure - The answer to this question depends entirely on whether Ukraine will win, or Russia. If Ukraine win...
