Email Design Best Practices: 11 Key Things to Know

As an email designer, I think it’s important to remember that design isn’t just about making things look pretty (although that is part of it). Great design focuses on usability and centers the audience and content.

Recently, I sat down with my teammate Kimberly Huang to discuss this and other email design best practices. I walk through some of the considerations I made when designing our two newest additions to our slate of newsletters, Litmus Experience and Product Pulse.

Whether you live and breathe design or it’s one of many email hats you wear, I hope these tips—like what we can learn from UX design—prove helpful when you’re planning your next email!

Your email opt-out procedures are more important than you think. 81% of people Capterra surveyed viewed brands that offered holiday-specific opt-outs as “empathetic.”
This report from Gated on sentiment towards email is good to keep in mind when targeting emails. 67% of respondents say they “feel overwhelmed by [their] inbox.”
