How was your week?

In Europe, we set the clock back last weekend. I went hiking the Sunday after and it was really entertaining so see people grapple with the time change.

Never before have I seen so many hikers scramble to get back to the parking lot before dusk, including myself. There we were, lazing in the sun at the hut with the best cake, totally oblivious to time and space. Half an hour later, I was part of a stream of people who were booking it downhill. Somehow, just somehow the sun set an hour earlier than yesterday. No way 😁! (Before you worry, everyone got home safely, it was a well-trodden and well-built path.)

Podcast Month

November is podcast month at Bye, Social Media! and I have really cool and helpful content coming your way. If you‘re interested in starting a podcast for your marketing, you‘ll love the things that I‘ll send out.

Today, I‘ll let you in on some of the things I learnt in my podcasting journey so far. Let my hindsight be your foresight! Later this month, I‘ll also share with you our content strategy and why podcasting is a big part in that and some other goodies and surprises.

I‘m experimenting with a themed month for content for the first time with this newsletter. And even if you‘re not sure about podcasting, I‘ll make sure that there are nuggets of wisdoms in here for you that make opening this emails worth your time.

Podcast Updates & Learnings So Far

I‘m making some changes to the podcast. I‘m retiring my old show, Johanna‘s podcast, and am opening a new chapter with cool, cool things I‘ll start sharing with you come next week.

3 Insights From My Podcasting Experiment

I really like podcasting as a way to create content and share information. I LOVE that it feels like I‘m having a conversation with you. It‘s dope that I can just record something on my phone upload it to Acast and boom, there we go - the podcast is out in the world. How cool is that that we live in a time and age where that‘s a thing???

As I‘m shifting gears with the show, here are some things I learnt that will be helpful for you, if you’re thinking about starting a podcast. I also share more about this in the episode.

Tip No. 1: Getting a start in podcasting isn‘t expensive. It can be free.

If you‘ve been wanting to start a podcast and are worried about the cost, don‘t. You can start for free with a combination of the voice note app on your phone and a platform like Acast. If you like podcasting, you can always upgrade your tech or format down the line. Acast is free and offers great functionality and distribution.

Tip No. 2: Done is better than perfect

I talk about this in the episode in more depth. At this point, I have enough self-awareness that I know my beginnings will be imperfect. I have to jump into the fray and just do-do-do, until I have learnt enough by doing to see what works.

So even though I would have loved for the audio quality to be better and for the title to be more snazzy, I‘m glad I gave myself room to experiment and play and find my best podcasting flow and setup. Well, and I‘m probably the only person who‘s ever gotten bit by a duck while recording a podcast. 🦆

Done is better than perfect, because by doing you can really hone in on what works and doesn‘t. Theorizing it will only get you so far. If you‘re prone to overthink this type of stuff, because of perfectionism, let my hindsight be your foresight: Just do it. Nike-style. Raaaah!

Tip No. 3: Your podcast title should be searchable

My biggest lesson in this podcast experiment is this so far - and you‘ll be surprised that it has nothing to do with the tech, the content, or the setup: Don‘t mess up your title‘s searchability.

When I renamed my show to Johanna‘s podcast, I liked the idea of centering it around me as the creator. I’m doing all the talking in it, so why not put on the label what‘s inside? Bad idea. I didn‘t plug the name into the existing podcast platforms. And once I had changed the name and did for the first time, I saw that it didn‘t show up ANYWHERE. Urgh. On the Apple podcast app, I had to scroll through four screens to eventually find it. Major eyeroll! That was so avoidable.

I don‘t think it makes any sense to overthink the title of a podcast. You can always change a title later. But it‘s important to think about the searchability of your show. More than once have people told me they were interested in listening only to then come around and tell me they coulnd‘t find it. Of course, they couldn‘t. „Did you scroll all the way to the end of the results?“ is not a cool conversation to have. Give your show a memorable title. Even more so, make sure that people can *actually* find it.
