Mastodon: A Good Twitter Alternative?

Twitter is in turmoil, and Mastodon is the next social media thing. Maybe.

But if you are a content creator or entrepreneur in the creator economy, should you make the leap to Mastodon? Will it help your business?

Let’s start the conversation.

What is Mastodon? Mastodon is a network of independent, interlinked servers. They host users’ microblog posts that other users can comment on or repost.

Imagine if Internet Relay Chat (popular in the 1990s) and early WordPress had a 21st-century baby with a modern interface and more sophisticated back-end messaging system.

What doesn’t Mastodon do? Mastodon won’t give you explosive discoverability and virality for you or your content. If you’ve become addicted to the dopamine hit of likes and follows, Mastodon doesn’t deliver that. It is old school. It is simple. It is a federated social network platform. If it becomes successful, it is likely to remain so for a long time.

What should be a creator’s first steps on Mastodon? Set up a Mastodon account and get a feel for the platform. If you find your first server isn’t the best fit, you can move your connections (but not your posts) to another server (including your own).

That’s one good thing about Mastodon’s federated open-source model – you can host your own Mastodon server. A couple of service providers offer this option now, and I’m sure we’ll see an avalanche of these offerings in the coming weeks and months.

What are the potential problems of Mastodon? If Mastodon grows in popularity, abuse problems experienced on other platforms are likely to arise – spam, harassment, account bans or thefts, etc. But its open-source model means no one from Mastodon will vet or hold users accountable.

You live at the discretion of your host server administrators. They can do what they will with your account. As many current servers are run by volunteers, things could get interesting.

If you own the server, you are responsible for the activity on it.

Biz: Debt to Dollars

Tilt: How to make money from Fulfillment By Amazon program

Scene: YouTube, Instagram (3K), Linktree

Snack Bites:

  • Josh didn’t set out to be a content entrepreneur. He tested and tried several side hustles so he could quit his day job.
  • One of the side hustles, Fulfillment By Amazon, led to some revenue, but it was a year after he added a YouTube channel to teach how to do FBA that he hit his $3.45K monthly goal and quit his 9-to-5 work.
  • In the first four months, his YouTube channel had more videos (31) than subscribers.
  • Josh’s success led him to raise his one-on-one coaching service rate from $50 in October 2020 to $149 a month in 2022.

Why We Stan: Josh didn’t start out his YouTube with a passion for his topic but a recognition of topics he knew that an audience was interested in. He also pushed through his regular publishing schedule even though his audience wasn’t growing as big as he wanted.

things to know

Money
  • Teasing taste: If a brand hasn’t responded to her email pitch, creator Jen Glantz says she’ll share her favorite product or item from them in an Instagram story, mention it in a Tiktok video or newsletter, or even DM the brand. (Insider)
Tilt Take: Brand deals don’t just happen. You need a marketing strategy to proactively engage them.
  • Walmart boost: YouTube series star-turned-HBO actress Issa Rae teamed up with Walmart to develop diverse creators through the Black & Unlimited Digital Development Program. Creators will pair with industry professionals and receive $10K stipends. Walmart will feature the creators on their YouTube channel. (tubefilter)
Tilt Take: Love to see stars and brands working together to lift up creators early in their careers.
Audiences
  • Data treasure: Viewers of beauty videos on YouTube are 5.84 times more likely to buy Nintendo DS games on Amazon compared to the average viewer. That’s just one of the findings in Tubular Navigating Social Video in 2023 report (registration required). It’s designed to help advertisers better understand video on social. (Digiday)
Tilt Take: Data for advertisers also can be a great source for creators seeking to better understand audience monetization.
  • Unsubscribe holiday: If you noticed a big dip in unsubscribes in the past week, don’t get too upset. Many people use the inundation of emails from Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday to cut down the senders allowed in their inboxes. (The source is us.)
Tilt Take: If your unsubscribes increased, monitor if your open and click-through rates improve because the remaining audience members always opened and clicked your content.
Tech and Tools
  • Read this: LinkedIn automates captions for videos posted by users. It also includes an edit feature if you need to tweak the translation. (Professor Nez)
Tilt Take: Captions work not only for those who have hearing difficulties but all those who don’t want to listen – and there are a lot of them.
  • Mobile boost: YouTube’s rolling out a mobile version of its Research in Analytics on the Studio app. It reveals top searches on the platform, content gaps, and watch activity based on your audience’s interests. It also will include features that aren’t available in the desktop version. (Social Media Today)
Tilt Take: When it’s available, take the mobile version for a spin, even if you prefer the desktop version, to see if it’s more helpful.
And Finally
  • Success tips: Newsletter creator Dylan Redekop earned $10K this year while working a full-time job. His success steps? Niching down, establishing relations with others in the same field, raising his newsletter ad rates, and joining ConvertKit’s sponsor network. (Growth Currency)
Tilt Take: Tweaking your business model and expanding your network can help you build short- and long-term growth.
  • All about: Every site should have a well-written about page. Here’s what to include: a clear value proposition, a list of relevant achievements, an engaging story, and a simple call to action. (Ghost; h/t For The Interested)
Tilt Take: Struggling to write your about page? Consider swapping with another creator. They write yours, and you write theirs.
