Hurry Slowly - A new grammar of love

Hi Friends-

Another year has turned, choral music is playing in the background, and I have an elderly cat nesting on my arm as I type this.

I'm just about to sit down and reflect on all of the shifts, changes, and evolutions that happened in 2022. Rather than looking forward to the new year, I prefer the ritual of looking back and celebrating the transformations that came along so slowly I barely noticed them as they were happening.

As always, music and writing were a big part of what kept me going through some rough patches last year. Below, I round up some of my favorite recent reads and a few older pieces that I still can't stop thinking about. Plus, a handful of songs that I played on loop.

One more exciting note: I've decided to re-open my Hi-Fi course for the first time since its original inception three years ago during the summer of 2020.

At its core, Hi-Fi is a course about coming back into the body and reconnecting to your intuition. And funnily enough, the day that I decided to reopen it — zing! synchronicity! — I got an email from a past participant, telling me how deeply her experience in Hi-Fi had impacted her.

I'll share a little bit about what she said in the next newsletter. For now, you can learn everything about the new edition of Hi-Fi here.

Registration will open in just about two weeks, on Thursday, January 19th, and the course will begin on January 29th.

If reconnecting with your intuition aligns with your new year's resolutions, I would love to have you join. : )

Sending warmth,
Jocelyn

LINK ABOUT IT

Adrienne Maree Brown and Autumn Brown on sustaining love. There is so much tender goodness in this episode. And if you dig it, dive into the podcast archives, the whole season is about love!

Céline Sciamma’s quest for a new feminist grammar of love. A wonderful portrait of one of my favorite filmmakers (Petite Maman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Tomboy, Water Lilies) by Elif Batuman.

Stephen Colbert on being grateful for grief. I recently discovered the beautiful and heartbreaking podcast All There Is with Anderson Cooper, which is named after the Peggy Lee song “Is That All There Is?” right after I had been walking down the street with a friend in NYC playing that very song from my iPhone and singing along. I found this interview with Stephen Colbert to be particularly moving.

If this were the day. A friend of mine who's a poet introduced me to Devin Kelly’s wonderful newsletter of meditations on poems and verse. His beautiful analysis often reads like a poem in and of itself. This new year’s day celebration of poetry and life is the perfect example.

A few pieces of content that I shared last year that I’m still thinking about:

Annie Murphy Paul on how humans think better when they’re moving.

Sonya Renée Taylor on what comes forth when we aren’t in struggle.

The beauty and the sadness of the Netflix documentary The Alpinist.

My interview with Sherri Mitchell on spiritual maturity.

This beautiful performance by pianist Hania Rani.

A manifesto for non-coercive marketing.

A few books I enjoyed last year — almost all fiction and often queer:

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

Bodywork by Melissa Febos

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Mathews

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

What We Do in the Dark by Michelle Hart

Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

These were 5 songs that helped me get through 2022:

"Aké" by Blick Bassy

"I Shall Believe" by Sheryl Crow

"Ventura" by Lucinda Williams

"Deep Peace" by Bill Douglas

"Living Life" by K. McCarty
