Why is a House committee chair requesting the White House turn over visitor logs?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
On Sunday the new chairman of the House Oversight Committee, GOP Rep. James Comer, requested visitor logs for President Biden's private residences. His request came after a set of classified documents was found at President Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware. They were taken during Biden's time as vice president, and come after an initial discovery of a few documents at President Biden's office in D.C.

The White House responded that there are no visitor logs to turn over. "Consistent with past precedent [...] his personal residence is personal," a spokesperson said. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said that Congress may investigate the issue separately from the Justice Department.

Biden's lawyers stress that they are cooperating with the law and that there are only a few documents, in contrast with the hundreds of files at Mar-a-Lago. However, the latest discoveries have raised questions as to the scope of the issue. The White House has also been criticized for not disclosing the news for weeks after the first documents were discovered.

Should legislatures be able to overrule a top court's decisions via a simple majority vote?

383 votes, 43 comments

Context: Israel's PM moves forward with plans to reduce the authority of the country's Supreme Court.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I do not believe that legislatures should be able to overrule top court decisions on constitutional matters by a simple majority, because this would effectively allow them to pass constitutional amendments as regular legislation. However, if the court ruling interpreted a law previously passed by a simple majority, the legislature should be able to amend the law that they passed as they see fit, and a court having ruled based on the previous version in a prior case should not prevent this.

Unsure - This depends on why the ruling was made. If the reason for the ruling is that the law does not correctly state what the legislature intended or ex...
