Why are sheriff's departments in Illinois refusing to enforce a new gun law?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
A new Illinois law has banned the sale, purchase, and import of assault weapons. The law uses a lengthy definition of "assault weapon" and lists over 60 specific models that qualify, as well as the entire category of AR rifles and some handguns. The measure also bans high-capacity magazines and switches, which can increase the firing rate. Those who already owned such guns will have to register them if they have not already.

At least 74 sheriff departments vow that they will not enforce the law, with most saying they will not arrest people who fail to comply with it or check to see if the weapons are properly registered. In total, the 74 departments cover four million residents, or 30% of the state's population. The state's most populous counties largely do not oppose the law.

Legal experts are also skeptical the bill will hold up in court, particularly after the Supreme Court overturned New York state's concealed carry law in June 2022. Some sheriffs say they are expecting the law to be struck down.

Should ExxonMobil face financial penalties for its past messaging on climate change?

Context: New study finds ExxonMobil's old internal research accurately predicted climate change.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Big Tobacco knew their product was carcinogenic and lied about it to the public. Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family knew their product was dangerously addictive and lied about it. And Exxon knew that their product was ruining the climate and they lied about it. All of them should pay financial penalties and more than a few corporate execs probably ought to go to jail.
