How I use AI in copywriting

In this newsletter, I'm sharing two impulses with you on how you can use AI for your marketing and copywriting.

That was before ChatGPT, an AI powered language processor/Google replacement/virtual oracle. Now we live in a different era. ChatGPT can do A LOT of things (even though it still has its limitations).

Use AI like your personal assistant

Let me share a secret with you. I have a burning disdain for menial tasks, an aversion to drafting pitch emails, and a deep insecurity about formulating blurbs and taglines in my own marketing.

One drains me and I would love to outsource more of that. The other is a source of insecurity, because I feel like I should be wittier and get to the point more. My brain likes to go in circles and weigh the pros and cons of things. In online marketing, it helps to get to the point. What a dilemma!

So, I decided to get some help and outsource some of my editing and writing to ChatGPT, just like I would do it with an assistant.

Use Case 1: Editing

Here is a little marketing blurb I wrote for a paid newsletter I write about technology and its impact on our lives. It's called "Tech and Us".

When I look at the first section (mine), it sounds a big clunky, like the information could be more condensed. As you can see, I entered the prompt "edit for clarity" into the ChatGPT program together with the text I wanted to edit.

I liked the result. It's more straight-forward and engaging. I only kicked out the duplicate "sign up now" at the end of the paragraph.

Takeaway:

AI tools can be great to edit writing or generate a draft you can edit. It's like having a team member or somebody around who you can ask: "Mind taking a look at it? I can't seem to make it sound right."

They can help you get out of your own head when writing. And gosh, do I sometimes need that.

Use Case 2: Outsource Menial Tasks

I'm a bird's eye view kinda gal. I thrive with creativity and taking the long view. It's like I have the view from a mountain top and can see major movement patterns and traffic. I'm also great at helping people with that, because I can see challenges from this vantage point - and often before they happen. You can access that in my 1:1 Impulse Sessions.

Where my energy is zapped, is when I have to get into the nitty gritty. For example: formulating emails for outreach and pitching. Urgh.

I'd love to have a team member I can give a list of companies I want to pitch, together with the task of researching email addresses and drafting an outreach email. That's what I intend to create for myself. Right now, it's a different reality and I need a workaround to protect my energy and what I'm good at.

So, I thought, why not make ChatGPT my assistant. Here's what I did:

Pretty cool, right?!? ChatGPT wrote this in less than a minute.

Takeaway:

Would I use this without editing? Nope, because it's a little too generic.

It's a great starting point to then add some flavor on why I like the podcast and more details on what I can contribute for the benefit of the audience. The draft above is a great starting point for some light editing. This will save me a LOT of time, because I'm better at editing texts like this than writing them myself.

I've been really content with both of the above uses for AI in marketing and for my work. I'm looking forward to exploring this tool more in the coming weeks.
