[Crew Review] Amazon expands Buy with Prime to all US sellers

Amazon will make Buy with Prime available to all US merchants starting January 31, scrapping the invite-only model with which it initially launched. The feature allows customers to check out of off-Amazon online stores using their saved details and accessing Prime benefits like free deliveries and returns, but its impact could be more far-reaching in the long run.

Updated Amazon Supply Chain Standards

Amazon’s updated Supply Chain Standards will take effect January 19. These are updated every three years as part of the company’s regular review. 

The update will introduce additional requirements to the company’s selling terms of service, some of which Amazon itself and other major corporations have been accused of violating:

• Further clarification that suppliers must have effective grievance mechanisms that workers can use to raise concerns without retaliation
• Further clarification that suppliers must provide workers with a safe and healthy work environment that avoids harm to workers' health
• Clearer specifications that suppliers must comply with applicable privacy and information security laws and regulations

Walmart Removes Boots from Marketplace

Walmart removed inappropriate boots from its online marketplace earlier this week for violating the retail giant’s prohibited product policy. As shown in a listing screenshot by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the boots in question bears the letters "KKK" on the tongue and was being sold by a company called “Harsuny.”

While many in the Twitterverse praised Walmart for its swift response in taking down the listing, others questioned why a Fortune 500 company even let it slip through in the first place.

Amazon to Layoff 18,000 Workers

A recent public staff note by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reveals that the ecommerce giant will be cutting more than 18,000 jobs, which it will start to communicate beginning January 18. 

Jassy’s announcement failed to specify in which countries the job cuts will occur—Amazon has an estimated workforce of 1.5 million globally and is the second-largest employer in the US. Trade unions criticized Amazon for the lack of more helpful information from the company.

Other tech companies have also previously expressed plans to downsize significantly, with the industry estimated to have shed more than 150,000 personnel in 2022.
