The GIST - The sports story no one’s discussing
From The Gist Team
Hump day!
Hope you’re having as good of a week as the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs, who throttled No. 3 TCU 65–7 (not a typo!) in Monday’s College Football Playoff (CFP) title game, becoming the first back-to-back champs since the CFP’s inception in 2014.
- Cue that confetti, then let’s tackle the rest of the latest sports news.

Quote of the Day |
Headed home to Buffalo today with a lot of love on my heart 🫶🏿…The same love you all have shown me is the same love that I plan to put back into the world n more. Bigger than football! 🫶🏿
— Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who returned to Buffalo on Monday where he continues to receive medical care after suffering an on-field cardiac arrest in Cincinnati last week. Keep spreading that love and those healing thoughts. |

⚽ NWSL: Watched it begin again
The GIST: All eyes are on the NWSL as the league reconciles with its past while looking ahead to the future. On Monday, they dropped a list of corrective action stemming from their December investigative report into systemic abuse within the league. And next they’ll kick off the 2023 draft tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET. It’s time for a new era.
The punishments: The corrective action includes a range of suspensions and fines for individuals and teams. Four former coaches were banned from the league for life: Paul Riley (who refuses to STFU), Christy Holly, Rory Dames and Richie Burke. Good riddance.
- A handful of other individuals are facing suspensions and/or “conditional returns” (which we dug into on yesterday’s episode of The GIST of It). Plus, six of the league’s 12 clubs are facing fines.
- The heaviest hit? The Chicago Red Stars ($1.5 million) and the Portland Thorns ($1 million), both of which are currently up for sale.
The draft: Amid the league-altering news, the NWSL now looks ahead to the annual business of teams adding to their rosters. Here’s how the draft works:
- There are four rounds with 12 picks each. The order is decided by each team’s record from the prior season, with the worst team picking first.
- But there can be (and often are) trades. For example, last week, Angel City FC went all in to snag the first pick, which is expected to be 18-year-old name, image and likeness history-maker, Alyssa Thompson.
- Other players to watch include USWNT U-20 captain Michelle Cooper, and Alabama’s SEC Defender of the Year Reyna Reyes. Start that clock.
😠 WTF: Breaking the silence
Content warning: This section contains mention of domestic violence.
The GIST: Blame it on the holiday-break news cycle, or the fact that one of the biggest sports media companies discouraged its employees from writing anything “incendiary” about it, but Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White publicly slapping his wife has gone stunningly underdiscussed.
- We don’t usually talk about UFC, but we have to talk about this.
The no-background: From controversially supporting former U.S. President Donald Trump in his re-election campaign to underpaying UFC fighters, Dana White is no stranger to making the wrong kind of headlines.
- Now he’s attempting to control the narrative once again, this time after being seen on camera slapping his wife during a New Year’s Eve party. Disgusting.
The response: It’s been disappointing to say the least, with the biggest repercussion being that the start of White’s new slap fighting league, which was originally set to begin broadcasting today, was postponed to next week. That’ll show him.
- Meanwhile, Endeavor, UFC’s parent company, and ESPN, which holds a five year, $1.5 billion broadcast deal with the organization, have yet to comment, with ESPN facing deserved criticism for their noticeably soft coverage of the situation.
What’s next: The California Legislative Women’s Caucus sent a letter to Endeavor’s CEO on Monday, calling for White’s immediate removal as UFC president. But if the org’s history of handling domestic violence cases is any indicator, it’s unlikely White will be ousted.
- That said, White himself previously stated in 2014 that “you don’t bounce back from putting your hands on a woman.” Let’s hope that rings true.

🎿 Skiing
Mikaela Shiffrin remains tied with Lindsey Vonn for most-ever World Cup wins after she came up just short of her biggest rival, reigning Olympic champion Petra Vlhová, in yesterday’s World Cup slalom race in Austria. Shiffrin’s quest for history will have to wait ’til next week, but don’t forget, a queen is never late.
⚾ MLB
The Carlos Correa drama could finally be coming to a close. After the San Francisco Giants backpedaled on their historic contract with the two-time All-Star shortstop due to injury concerns, and the NY Mets did the same, he appears to have finally settled on a six-year, $200 million deal with the Minnesota Twins…the same team he played for last season. What a journey.
🎓🏀 NCAA basketball
With March Madness just over two months away (!!!), it’s time for a status update. In women’s hoops, reigning champs South Carolina have held the No. 1 spot for 29 straight polls. Plus, the Gamecocks are one of just three undefeated teams left in Division I (D1), along with No. 3 Ohio State and No. 5 LSU, both of whom have exceeded preseason expectations.
- It’s all about the madness in the men’s game, with no undefeated D1 teams remaining. One of the last to tumble? No. 3 Purdue, who dropped from No. 1 after losing to Boilermaker-kryptonite Rutgers last week.
