Do you feel appreciated? Do you feel understood?

So often, when I speak with people about what's bothering them, the underlying issue is the same: we're not seen.

Our efforts go unnoticed, our comments unacknowledged, our feelings brushed aside.

It happens at work. It happens at home. It happens in public. 

Writing online is a way through it. When you write online, you find your people. You build an audience that is uniquely tuned to your ideas, and they're grateful you share them. 

One fear I struggled with was being ignored. I would think, "There won't be people who care about what I have to say." Countless stories from alumni proved me wrong. In his essay, "A Pilgrimage for Book People," Charlie Becker speaks directly to his people, his audience:

A lot of people read books. A lot of people like books. A lot of people own books. Not all of those are my people: "book people" — people who love and revere books and all they stand for.

There are people who care what you have to say. Your people are all over the world, and in the next town over. They're sitting next to you in a coffee shop with headphones on. Justin Mather's article, "How to Make Friends on the Internet," shows this with a story about the bustling streets of Shibuya.

When you start writing online, you will feel appreciated. You will be seen. And you'll learn to be more clear, concise, and confident. Opportunities will start coming your way.
