Why does former President Trump say he will be arrested this week?

Source: Truth Social via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
Former President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he expects to be arrested this Tuesday on charges of making hush payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. An indictment from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is generally expected, but the timing remains unclear. The grand jury must still hear another witness before voting for charges. An indictment would likely concern the improper use of campaign funds.

Trump called for his supporters to protest his arrest. Bragg appeared to reference Trump's comments in an email to his office that said "We do not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office or threaten the rule of law in New York." Bragg also addressed security concerns among lower Manhattan courts, saying law enforcement would investigate any credible threats.

Trump's lawyer had told CNBC on Friday that the former president would surrender peacefully in the event of an indictment. CNN, citing anonymous sources, reported that Trump genuinely expects an arrest, but also wanted his team to excite his base over the prospect of an arrest.

Is France's government justified in bypassing a legislative vote on pension reform?

228 votes, 22 comments

Context: President Macron's government uses special legal procedure to raise retirement age without legislative vote.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - While France clearly needs pension reform, doing so without the support of the legislature is a recipe for failure. If it's like the US, the next executive will run on an anti-current policy platform and will then reverse the changes after being elected. Legislatures need to make these unpopular but necessary calls. Too bad that they normally won't.

Yes - This is how political systems work. Macron took executive control of a program he felt needed to be changed. The legislature was in a difficult position, about to enact a change with a...
