Why did President Biden approve the Willow oil drilling project in Alaska?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
President Biden on Monday approved an $8 billion drilling project in Alaska. The Willow Project stands to produce 576 million barrels of oil over 30 years, peaking at 180,000 barrels per day. Energy company ConocoPhillips will only be allowed to operate three sites, rather than the five it requested.

ConocoPhillips said extraction may entail re-freezing the rapidly thawing Arctic permafrost to keep equipment stable. The process could potentially produce twice as many emissions as the combined emissions reduction of all renewable energy projects on public land. Over its lifespan, the Willow Project is projected to emit as much as 70 new coal plants. Some worry the project could release dangerous gas trapped under the permafrost.

Alaska's bipartisan congressional delegation urged the Biden administration to approve the project. Some Native American tribes opposed the project, concerned about the impact on the local environment, while other tribes supported the project because of economic benefit. ConocoPhillips said it would decrease dependence on foreign energy.

Should Congress authorize the US to use military force against drug cartels?

Context: Mexico's president rebukes US lawmakers proposing military force against cartels.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Most of us know or have personally suffered the loss of someone due to drug-related death. Every time I run into one of our dear friends he worries that his drug addicted daughter is going to come across fentanyl. It breaks my heart to see him and his wife suffer over that prospect. Most, not all, of these drugs (fentanyl, coke, meth, heroin, etc) came from or through the Mexican cartels. The Mexican government is too weak and/or corrupt to do what is required. [...] If we can use our military to go halfway around the world and put down Al Qaeda, Saddam, ISIS and so on, we can do it in our own backyard.

No - The authorizations for military force in Iraq and Afghanistan were pitched as short operations that would quickly get the bad guys. How did that turn out? And if anyone el...
