Why are thousands of Los Angeles school employees on strike?

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics

  1. Summary
The Los Angeles Unified School District, America's second-largest, shut down Tuesday as tens of thousands of employees began a three-day strike. The strike occurred after failed negotiations with a union representing custodial workers, security staff, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and more. The teachers went on strike in solidarity.

The union representing the district's 30,000 non-teaching staff, SEIU, wants the district to increase pay by 30% and add a $2-per-hour "equity wage adjustment." The district says its offer of a 23% wage hike and 3% cash bonus is already generous. SEIU said talks broke down on Monday, but superintendent Alberto Carvalho said there were no talks.

Enrollment in LAUSD schools staffed by union members has decreased over the years, while enrollment in charter schools has increased. Declining enrollment and academic performance have also squeezed the district's budget. But advocates for the strikers say non-teaching staff are underpaid and overworked, which impacts students as well.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Not really. Since I lived in a Moscow-ruled country, lying, or exagarated and/or selective news from the ruling elite was nothing new. It was also clear that the new Iraq, free of Saddam, had a perfect chance to become a better country. When I saw that the country's inhabitants chose to become something else, the last thing on my mind was to blame the US.
