This week, we’ve got Koray Tuğberk GÜBÜR to talk about what he’s up to, topical authority, URL hijacking, Google’s recent core update, Foreign SEO, ranking feedback— basically, if it’s worth covering, we cover it. It’s simple: he knows a ton and was an excellent guest..

Tune in to check it out.

What’s Good @ Google: Using AI to Address Search Abandonment (and more) 📊
Google Cloud just dropped some new research on search abandonment. ICYMI, Search Abandonment is what happens when a potential customer is on a retailer's website or app, but doesn't find what they're looking for due to interface issues, etc. Despite the massive investment into this already, the estimated loss on a global scale has been estimated at around $2 trillion annually.
So, Google Cloud AI and Shopify are teaming up so merchants can utilize Google’s AI interface.  This integration- featuring Google Cloud Retail Search, an AI-powered browser feature, an AI-driven personalization capability, "Recommendations AI," and advanced security and privacy practices- looks to provide the customer with the consistency currently lacking that would prevent search abandonment, and merchants with the AI tools to make that happen.
Tests Blue Badge for Verified Advertisers: Has the day finally come?
Right now this is just in a testing phase, but don't be surprised if you start seeing little blue checkmarks on some of your Google ads.
Core Update Update: as we talk about in the pod, the effects of the most recent update (March 15th) are still creeping in and only initially being felt— as usual, we’re figuring it out as it comes.

But there’s definitely some volatility / fluctuation...
🔌 Speaking of Google..

Local Search Ranking Report: 2023 Edition 🔍
The Local Ranking Factors report by Whitespark just dropped. Among other things, the report debunks old SEO myths, provides insight into common practices, and does a really impressive job creating a thorough survey of what’s changing vs. what’s remaining the same in Local SEO.
Tons of good info. For example, 5 times as many SEOs are using AI to create content as they are responding to reviews, writing spreadsheet formulas, and running images through Google Vision AI (for now). Likewise, three times as many are using AI for Content ideation/inspiration as they are for keyword research and topic clustering.

Plus, the various pros whose answers constitute the survey data drop some expertise on specific topics.

AI Insight: Canva & Adobe Get on Board 🤖🎨
→ Massive list of OpenAI plug-ins just dropped (and is still dropping). ChatGPT keeps growing with a full suite of chatbots, add-ons, plug-ins, and so on. Tons of potential here to stream workflows, improve customer service, and personalize marketing using these tools, especially as these plugins will allow ChatGPT to access news, local commercial openings and closings, and things like up-to-date hotel rates. Basically, this connection to the web is a massive improvement from when ChatGPT could only reference what it was already trained on. Now, it can make reservations at restaurants, book travel, spill tea on the day's gossip, and more.

→ Adobe just dropped Firely, a suite of generative AI models to suit their wide repertoire of creative tools. Firefly AI has the capacity to generate graphics, video ads, product images, and more. The simple drag-and-drop interface shows the emphasis on user-friendliness, as this intuitive layout will make it easy to create high-quality, already-optimized content.

→ Canva Magic Presentations launches AI-powered Visual Worksuite… if you’re not already deep into Canva, we’re not playing the same game RN. Like Firefly, this platform’s integration of AI is user-friendly and accessible, with a range of pricing options.

→ the continued confusion around deep-fakes- like the Pope w/ drip- is getting people talking about the potential issues AI image generation may stir up… As AI image generation becomes more commonplace, social media platforms are going to have to figure out how to deal with the increased potential for deception, while creators figure out how to use this power to develop new forms of art and entertainment. And marketers, of course, have to be on the pulse of harnessing computer-generated content— seems like it could become a huge resource for creating highly-targeted, attention-catching campaigns… oh yeah, and there’s also the whole "navigating ethical and legal questions," too. I guess.
Social Media Round-up 🐮
→ Talkin’ TikTok: US Ban continues to make news, with Shou Chew reaching out to the app’s 150M supporters in the USA for support— many are calling it a betrayal of the internet’s promise of openness; announces Branded Effects platform for marketers

→ A look into the New Insta Ads Format(s); Meta keeps getting criticized for "inadequate response" to grim data re: social media and mental health, especially in teens & youth;

→ the big news with Twitter this week? Reportedly valued at $20B, which of course is … half …  of what Elon paid for the app. Twitter is also ditching Legacy Verification and removing checkmarks; plus, Twitter’s also giving Blue subscribers the option to hide their checkmark— for whatever reason

Scaling With SEO 📈
Stumbled on this little, under-read Medium article from last month. Sandy Rowley, Rand Fishkin, and friend of my podcast Brian Dean all contributed as interviewees to this piece on the 5 Best SEO Strategies to Scale Your Business in 2023.

The 5 tools identified in the piece? Keyword Research, Link Building, On-Page Optimization, Mobile Optimization, and Local SEO. Each is explained with some valuable commentary.

Some of this will be obvious to some of you, but it’s worth repeating. If you’re not grinding away on any or all of these, at least to some degree, you’ve got to figure that out. There’s almost always some work to be done on all 5.
