Stoked to have Ryan McKenzie on the pod this week. Over the interview, Ryan lets us in not only on how he grows Tru Earth, but how he’s had success on YouTube and in cultivating a killer personal brand. Among other things, we drop takes on: marketing channels, UGC creation and ad performance, attribution issues, calculating LTV, and tackle the biggest question of all: how do you decide how much to pay yourself?

Killer guest, great chat. Tune in.

AI Insight: Google Changes the Game (Again) ‼️ +
marketingletter
Google made serious waves on Monday with the announcement of Magi, which seems destined to overtake Bard as its major AI project. As I reported in this hot tweet, Project Magi is designed to allow searchers to perform transactions seamlessly while also integrating search ads within the page. With a chat-like interface, Project Magi is a stepping stone into a new search engine they are planning on releasing to an initial group of a million people.

Search as we know it will be changed forever.

From an SEO perspective, you can optimize your site so that Project Magi shows your products and services… These features will reduce clicks to our sites significantly, and the impact will be equivalent to going from 30% to 3% CTR (90% decrease).

Oof.

→ That being said, there’s a silver lining to every cloud or whatever:
marketingletter
Guess we’ll see how "brilliant" we think this is when it rolls out, but there’s no doubt the competition is about to heat up. Never been a better time to be subbed to my newsletter, I guess. Tell your friends.

→ If you don’t feel like watching the entire 60 Minutes feature on AI w/ Google’s Sissie Hsiao, Sundar Pichai, James Manyika & co., you can just scan the text here; one of the big revelations is that Google has been playing its hand cautiously re: AI with more advanced reasoning and planning capabilities, and Search compatibility.

→ If you’re looking to keep tabs on OpenAI’s activity, this substack tracks literally all of it.

→ I know that everyone and their dog is pumping out SEO prompt tips on Twitter, but this Tailwind guide is particularly well-researched:

marketingletter
→ If you’re playing with prompts, however, it’s worth having "prompt injection" on your radar, which some experts are saying is a risk that is "not being taken as seriously as it should."

→ This Wired.com piece explores OpenAI’s estimations that suggest diminishing returns on scaling up model size, and Altman’s comments that the next advancements will be innovation within the GPT-4 model.

What’s Good @ Google 📊
Other than disrupting the AI space, there’s some other Google activity to cover this week.

Google Search just introduced a display of shipping and return information on Google Search. Having this appear with text results for commerce sites is an attempt to ease the process of monitoring and fixing whatever structured data is needed to enable this display using the Search Console Shopping reports and tools:

marketingletter
If your shipping and return record is strong, it's worth taking the steps to make this visible through Search. Many, including SearchEngineLand, are speculating this will improve your visibility and could benefit your click-through rate.

→ As usual, SERoundtable.com is providing up-to-the-hour updates on the latest Google update, gathering commentary from all around the SEO community. The TLDR is that this update "did do damage but not as widespread as many other Google updates." Plus, keeping the trend going, the first "E" in E-E-A-T (experience) is being pushed hard.

→ Speaking of E-E-A-T, this piece by Search Engine Land unpacks the idea in detail, explaining that individual content at document-level is not what E-E-A-T focuses on. Rather, domain-level and entity-level factors like entire collections of content and off-page signals are what’s primarily assessed. The article’s discussion of how Google identifies and scores authors is definitely worth reading.

marketingletter
→ Google is once again advising you to avoid cloaking HTTP status code, leading users to use the "noindex" tag instead. ICYMI, cloaking is a black hat method of gaming the algo by showing different versions of a page to crawlers vs. human visitors. It often works, until it doesn’t— at the end of the day, transparency is the safer play.

Social Media Round-up 💬
marketingletter
→ Some tips by TechCrunch on how to improve re: short-form video, particularly TikTok, in 3 easy steps: 1) competitor analysis 2) ideate on content pillars 3) hire creator talent;

→ This is a solid Hootsuite post on how to get your content seen on Insta, featuring good tips like: schedule your posts at the right time for maximum reach, make original content, get your hashtag game in order, and 7 more; The Information reports that Meta is pulling out all the stops to lure advertisers, with AI-integration, Reels discounts, and more; Adweek looks over the data to argue why Instagram just as worthy of prioritizing as ever for marketers: "Instagram has proven to be the best source of ROI, engagement and quality leads… Marketers also feel that the Instagram algorithm is the most accurate, and that it’s the best place to grow a brand audience";

marketingletter
Twitter’s subscription plan is back, meaning you can monetize your content in what is basically a rebrand from the Super Follow program; and if you’re paying $1K monthly for that golden checkmark, monetizing your tweets may become a necessity; how about another "Is Twitter Finally Dying" article, just for kicks, this time by Vox; on that note, with 50% of journalists saying they’re considering quitting Twitter, it should be hilarious to see how many actually go through with that (lol); as we all know, Elon has been mad suspicious about Substack’s Twitter-like feed… but what about Twitter’s attempt to be Substack (aka 10K character tweets);
marketingletter
everyone when anyone posts a 10K character tweet

→ BTW, if you’re wondering how things are going on Twitter, the dude who invented the hashtag just quit
