Priya Ramesh, aka Contra

“We look at artists as architects in this city, who are not just beautifying it, but redesigning the way we think through art.”

Priya Ramesh is a multidisciplinary artist and musician who helps curate BUMP Festival, a 30-day community-led street art festival in Calgary. By creating dozens of murals that soar into the sky and can be seen from all around the city, BUMP Festival artists create galvanizing public experiences that can pierce the otherwise myopic focus of different walks of life. Ramesh spends her CreativeMornings/Calgary talk exploring the meaning and power of public art: how it can foster civic pride in the place you live and work, and how it can serve as a beacon for artists to see that it’s possible to be compensated well for their art. Watch Priya Ramesh’s invigorating talk and think about how public art shifts the way you move through your city.

Our June theme is "Reverie," chosen by CreativeMornings/Omaha. What thoughts and images populate your daydreams? Where do you go when you find yourself in reverie? What role does your wandering mind play in your life? Whether it’s a story, image, observation, song, poem, or other artifact, you can share your submissions in this form by Monday, May 22. We’ll feature a round-up in our Reverie issue at the end of the month!
