Do you want to make custom Google Sheet formulas?
Hey,
There's over 500 Google Sheet formulas native to Google Sheets. But there could be more.
Do you wish to make more? Do you even want to distribute them?
The next Google Sheet Add-on I'm making creates 3 custom functions. You install the free add-on and then bam, you have 3 more formulas that are native to sheets. Meaning you start typing them and they auto complete. They have a little helper text and all that jazz.
The formulas I'm adding are something I wish Google Sheets had. I will tell you more about it once the Add-on is approved and available in the add-on marketplace.
For now I can tell you that it's something that I wish existed because I've been writing a TON in sheets, with AI.
I originally wrote the apps script to connect GPT-3 to Sheets:
And this week I upgraded it to GPT-4 (or GPT-3.5) essentially adding chat messages to the apps script.

Back to the topic at hand of custom formulas.
I did make a video about how to do this: https://bettersheets.co/tutorials/make-your-custom-functions-like-native-functions-custom-function-autocomplete
It's essentially just adding some structured text before the apps script function. That's all. It's really really simple.
But wondering if you want to know more about that process. and/or you want to know how to then turn them into Add-ons and distribute them publicly.
That's the question of this email.
What do you want to know about adding formulas to sheets?
A few ideas on how an agency or an online business could make an add-on useful and public
- An SEO agency could release their proprietary math to rank sites. With key inputs like CPC, Volume, and more, you can then do the math for a user. Give it free as a lead magnet without having to publish the actual math. The add-on will hide the apps script, but users can still use it in their sheets. SEO agencies now selling sheet templates could add this math to your users sheets without having to put it in apps script in a publicly available template.
- Project Managers or Business Consultants could do the same thing with proprietary stats, or ranking methods. Taking in some specific data and output ranks based on the specific math you came up with.
- Ghost writers could create a formatting or text template tool. In addition to releasing written templates as a trip wire, a ghost writer could come up with textual formats and someone can just call them to the sheet with a few inputs. Think of it like Madlibs.
I just added the TITLE case formula to Google Sheets. (free on YouTube, free sheet for Better Sheets Members)
