Maybe you freeze at the thought of sharing your ideas. It makes your hands break out in ferocious palm-sweat. Maybe it evokes an intense queasiness, like you’re on an inner-tube in the world’s biggest wave pool.

So, you write in private. You keep your ideas to yourself. And without feedback, you have no idea whether you’re improving. You’re simply writing into the void. 

Before the Internet, writers had to submit their work to publications and wait years before they received any praise or encouragement. Walt Disney was told he lacked imagination. J.K Rowling was a single mother on welfare who received countless rejections for an eclectic little story by the name of “Harry Potter.” And in an intense episode of self-doubt, Stephen King physically threw away his drafts of Carrie.

This is where the power of feedback comes in. 

Sometimes, all a writer needs is a little validation. Feedback is a writer's greatest gift. And today, it’s more accessible than ever before. You can broadcast your ideas to the world, while you sip your morning coffee. You can get feedback from strangers in Tokyo, Paris, and LA. 

By writing on the Internet, you can go from the void to validation. 

Imagine sharing your writing with a stranger, and they leave a comment: “This piece really resonated with me. Thank you for writing!” Imagine your friend eagerly asking, “Where can I find more of your work?” Imagine your co-worker stopping you at lunch and saying, “Your piece was so good I sent it to my mom!” 

Writing isn’t solitary. Writing is social. When you write in public, you invite feedback from people all over the world, which accelerates your growth and compounds your potential. 

So, stop writing into the void. Start writing in public, and get feedback on your ideas.
