Have you ever gone for a run when you’re out of shape? 

Two minutes in, everything hurts. Your lungs burn. Your muscles cramp. You start to think of marathons the same way you think of rocket science and brain surgery: impossible. “How do they do it?”

But when you stick with running, everything changes. What used to be a week’s workout becomes a casual morning warm-up. What used to feel impossible becomes possible.

Experienced runners claim to have this euphoric, overwhelming feeling of a “runner’s high” after intense exercise. As soon as you stop running, endorphins rush to your head. And the equivalent for a writer is what happens the moment you hit “Publish.”

Instead of endorphins, publishing releases a rush of encouragement. 

For the first time, a stranger finds your work and is excited about your ideas. Old friends reach out to say that what you wrote made their day. You get feedback and feel seen.

It’s only by training hard and crossing the finish line that you unlock feedback: a writer’s high. It’s a positive-feedback loop (pun intended). Encouragement from your readers gives you the strength to keep publishing. And the more you publish, the more feedback you’ll receive.
