My YouTube channel has around 2,000 subscribers.

I make travel-related videos to support my travel blog.

I started the YouTube channel about 4 years ago,

But in the first 4 years, I only posted 8 videos.

I'll call that a fail!

Why?

Well, making YouTube videos is incredibly time-consuming.

I thought that the time would be better spent by focusing on my blog.

And I'm glad I did that

Because the blog now gets over 1 million pageviews per month.

But, in 2023, I do believe that having a YouTube channel alongside a blog is incredibly valuable.

Here are 5 reasons why:

1.  It shows Google that you're a real person doing the thing you're writing about

2. It helps to build a brand - people remember you better when they see your face

3. You can send traffic between YouTube, your site and social media

4. A YouTube channel is a good backup, in case the blog doesn't get as much traffic in the future

5. Brands love video - they're more likely to send you free products/press trips if you make videos

I started making YouTube videos again 4 months ago and have since made 10 videos.

I did want to do one per week, 

But did I tell you they take freaking ages!?

It takes me about 10 hours to make each video, hence the slow pace.

Here's how my views have looked over the past year... 

The requirements for monetisation on YouTube are 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time.

I found that reaching 1,000 subs was pretty easy as I have a sizeable email list.

All I had to do was send them an email and ask them to subscribe.

Reaching the 4,000 hours of watch time was a little trickier.

It took 7 new videos and 3 months before I hit the target and became eligible for monetisation.

My channel has been monetised for 6 weeks now.

The question that I was dying to know the answer to was - how much would it make when monetised?

Well, here's the answer...

In the first 6 weeks of being monetised, my site made £75.96.

That's $95.

I'm pretty pleased with that.

I asked some others about their experiences and that seems about average.

I'm getting $9.50 per video and each one is taking me 10 hours, so that's almost $1 per hour. LOL!

Of course, that's not how you should do the maths on this, because we all have to work for free at first, don't we?

The RPM on my videos is about $5.

That will increase as my videos get longer and more engaging.

Creators in my niche regularly get 500k views per video.

So even at the same RPM, they're making $2,500 per video.

That's just from ads though.

They also have sponsors and affiliates. So you can probably double that figure.

I do believe that YouTube is a good use of my time at the moment.
