In this week’s editorial, DAOpunk livefast9986.eth writes about DAOpunks’ recent NFT drop — I AM ANON — which he conceived of and executed. It’s a warm note to the DAOpunks community, and a furtherance of its vision and manifesto: to free us from the soul-sucking drudgery of default-world work. And in case you missed the news, DAOpunks opened applications for its latest grants round. Will you be one of the three grantees given 1 ETH, ANON?

What Makes a DAOpunk?

To the average person in web3, what makes a DAOpunk is fairly simple and straightforward — you own a DAOpunk NFT. But being a DAOpunk is more than just owning an NFT; it’s a calling, a summoning of the type of person or character that you are in web3…a recognition of an archetype.

The DAOpunks NFT project started back in October of 2021, creating 1,111 unique NFTs within four different archetypes: ANON, Crypto Native, Creative, or Shadowy Super Coder. The original project did not provide any details on the specific archetype other than a unique design, model, and pose to distinguish each one of them, and there wasn’t a story to be had about their origins.

The DAOpunks have been steadily building throughout 2023, even going so far as to make Vitalik Buterin a DAOpunk. But closer to home, this DAOpunk wondered: what if we opened ourselves up to allow more DAOpunks into our community? We have seen so many people proudly rep our 1-of-1 t-shirts:

We have learned that so many more people want to become a DAOpunk and help contribute to our grants program, so why do we need to stop at 1,111 DAOpunks?

I AM A DAOpunk

Remember how I mentioned that the DAOpunk archetypes didn’t have any descriptive details? As one of the core contributors and Community Manager for DAOpunks, I wanted to rectify that and delve deeper into some lore for each of them.

The ‘I AM A’ collection is designed to tell a story about each of the archetypes and what makes them unique. The idea is that people will identify and resonate with these stories and potentially see a bit of themselves in each of them, only to realize that they themselves are a DAOpunk. Then they can say with pride: ‘I AM A DAOpunk’.

The ANON is the first drop of the ‘I AM A’ collection. The ANON preaches that privacy is a fundamental right and talks about the benefits of keeping your identity hidden in web3. You can read all about it, and if you find that it speaks to you, can also mint it for 0.03 ETH on Optimism until July 21.

Each wallet that mints will be eligible to claim a free I AM A ANON t-shirt from the DAOpunks merch store. Details on how to claim are provided in the DAOpunks Discord.
