Flow State - Yuja Wang
You’re on the free tier of Flow State. To support our work and unlock more music, become a paid subscriber: Good morning. Today we’re listening to Yuja Wang, a Chinese classical pianist based in New York City. Born in Beijing in 1987, she took up piano at age six, began study at the Central Conservatory of Music at age seven, and enrolled at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia at age 15.¹ In the early 2000s, she won several major international piano compositions while still a teenager.² The word most commonly associated with Wang is “virtuosic”, because of her ability to blur her hands across the keys while hitting notes precisely and expressively. We’re playing her latest two records. The American Project performs original works by two American composer friends of Wang: a solo piano piece by Michael Tilson Thomas and a jazzy, fast-paced concerto by Teddy Abrams. The Verbier Festival Debut Recital 2008 is a live performance recorded during her breakout period, featuring composers such as Liszt, Scriabin, and Ravel.
