How this change increased revenue by 30% of a 130-year-old event

The State Fair of Texas is a 130-year-old event.
For over the past 20-some years their results were stagnant: about 3 million visitors each year.

After they did this thing, their revenue increased by 30%.


The thing:

They started to collect emails of their visitors through incentivized email sign-ups:
1. Win free tickets 100, 65 and 30 days before the next fair (a welcome email saw a 55% open rate).
2. Get a special birthday message (42% open rate).
3. Coupon giveaways.

Result:
113,000 email subscribers in 3 years.
30% increase in revenue.
