Hello Sifted reader,

We were a few days late on a story about CERN opening up its world-class facilities to startups (do we want to use the particle accelerator? Hell yes!). It was announced quietly and with little media attention.

But even if we were late, we wanted to cover it because of what it means for Europe’s spinout story. The programme — CERN Venture Connect — wants to avoid the licensing and IP issues that often occur when startups collab with research institutions, by offering a simple agreement.

There’s a lot of science-based innovation going on in Europe today that doesn’t get press attention. And even though our journalists are out every day trying to track down the most exciting startups, that doesn’t mean we see everything being built by every team.

Some startups go all in on media relations, and the companies that do get their message out there tend to be the ones shouting the loudest. But other, more technically-minded founders and inventors who might not have experience talking up their product or service, don’t. How many groundbreaking ideas are out there that we don’t know about?
