Famous article by Ran Prieur on, more or less, how to drop out of society by decreasing the amount of money you need.

I disagree w/ much of it, but I appreciate a lot of the mindset, especially around the intentionally of what you spend & why.

The opening line to his October 2008 update is fascinating:

“1. Do not drop out. Instead, try to stop yourself from committing suicide until you can find a job that is so non-hellish that it does not make you suicidal, and then stay at that job, or an even better one if you can find it, for several decades.” [emphasis mine]

I wonder about all the people in the 1st world who have terrible, awful, soul-destroying jobs… and are totally unaware of the entire industries of non-awful jobs that exist that they already have the skills for.

This was definitely me… working as an auditor for a Big 4 firm was truly terrible. I was working in the Bay Area, auditing tech companies. I knew the tech world existed, and I even knew the jobs were way cooler & more interesting. I did not know that I could so easily jump into that world, find a better job, and do so immediately.
