“I believe a home should provide an environment free from corruption and invasions of privacy, allowing for a sense of safety, freedom, and autonomy.”

Data privacy can feel mind-numbingly abstract: we can’t feel or touch data but it’s flowing everywhere. Because we can’t wrap our minds around the issue, we hand over our data and agency to corporations who make decisions in their best interests, not ours. UX designer Hanna van Rixtel seeks to remedy this problem by making data issues tangible and human-scale. Using graspable metaphors, like curtains and pipes, and a “data shop” experience, she helps individuals understand their privacy choices and retain control over the technology in their lives.

Watch Hanna van Rixtel’s talk for CreativeMornings/Rotterdam and learn how designers and consumers alike can reclaim their data autonomy.
