It’s Tuesday. Yesterday, Pepsi turned 125 years old. At least its name did—prior to that, the soda was called Brad’s Drink after its creator, pharmacist Caleb Bradham. He changed it to Pepsi-Cola since the soda was supposed to help with dyspepsia, aka indigestion.

To celebrate the milestone, Pepsi kicked off a 125-day celebration that’ll last until New Year’s Eve. ICYMI, we talked to Pepsi’s CMO about the festivities.

EXPERIENTIAL

Feel the burn

Sunburn Cannabis dispensary Sunburn Cannabis

With 11 stores across Florida and two more to come by the end of the year, medical marijuana dispensary Sunburn Cannabis needs to promote its brand one way or another.

But the state’s rules are “stringent,” according to founder and CEO Brady Cobb. Recreational marijuana isn’t legal in the state, and a recent law passed by Gov. Ron DeSantis bans ads that promote recreational use.

On the national level, weed marketers are limited on digital platforms, and print poses difficulties as well, Cobb said. Some in the industry have turned to platforms like podcasts and OOH as workarounds, but Cobb found a different solution: hyper-local experiential campaigns tied to music or water sports.

“I can’t think of a concert I’ve been to where you didn’t smell some weed,” he told Marketing Brew. “We are not inventing anything there. We are just embracing.”

You might not have heard of LQR House, but don’t be surprised if you catch a glimpse of the company popping all over Nasdaq as it began trading on the platform earlier this month after its IPO.

The liquor marketing company, which works with the likes of Country Wine & Spirits and Ssquared Spirits under an exclusive agreement, plans to raise $5 million by offering 1 million shares at a price of $4 to $6 and intends to become “the full-service digital marketing and brand development face of the alcoholic beverage space,” per the company.

“The big guys out there…massive distribution companies, have thousands of people out in the workforce understanding trends, while we use technology, we use the quarter-million customers that we have through CW Spirits,” LQR House CEO Sean Dollinger told Retail Brew. “For example, two years ago, during the holiday season, we saw peach was really trending. So we were able to create a peach-infused tequila first—[the] first of its kind. So it really allows us to have the knowledge before things actually take off.”

Beth Wade is global CMO at VMLY&R. She served as CMO of VML before its merger with Y&R.

Favorite project you’ve worked on? One of my favorite projects for VMLY&R was creating our Re/Imagine Client Event Series. We’ve hosted many inspiring speakers including Kara Swisher, Scott Galloway, and Arthur Brooks over the last two years.

What’s your favorite ad campaign? My current favorite ad campaign is “Jen AI” with Virgin Voyages. It gives me a good laugh every time I watch it.

One thing we can’t guess from your LinkedIn profile? I love animals, especially my dog Ollie.

What marketing trend are you most optimistic about? Least? One trend that I am optimistic about is humor in advertising—let’s get back to sharing a laugh and smile together. One trend I’m less excited about...VR. People are craving in-person experiences...case in point, The Eras Tour.
