Most mornings, I don’t feel like working out. But I never fail to get in my run or lift. Despite not wanting to lace up my shoes or warm into my kettlebell routine, I do it anyway. I’ve long been a proponent of discipline, espousing the importance of being disciplined and how motivation and inspiration are fleeting and unreliable. But I’m starting to realize that discipline is not so different from motivation. My consistency isn’t because I have the hardened mind of the disciple of discipline, Jocko Willink, but because I have forged rituals and routines that I slip into every morning without giving it a second of thought.
