Why are Burning Man attendees trapped at the festival?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Thousands of Burning Man festival-goers are trapped at Black Rock City, the temporary city established in Nevada's Black Rock Desert for the festival. Festival organizers said an estimated 75,000 people attended Burning Man in 2022 and expected a similar number this year.

Unusual heavy rains on Friday and Saturday resulted in authorities closing roads in and out of the site. The Bureau of Land Management said the site's ground is an ancient lake bed with fine silt and clay; when it is wet, "vehicles can get very stuck." Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said that the rain made it "made it virtually impossible" for vehicles to cross. The DJ Diplo, an attendee, said he walked five miles in the mud to get out.

One death was confirmed on Sunday, a day after festival organizers urged attendees to conserve food and water. Burning Man Project official Dominique Debucquoy-Dodley said the event is well-prepared for extreme weather. Sheriff Allen said resources are being collected from the surrounding region to provide medical assistance as needed.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Assuming that this is just the beginning of something, rather than just something transitory, it will only get worse. In that case, yes, he should resign. If not just for his own and his family's sake, then for the country's sake. I'm not that concerned about who is leading his party in the Senate, but I am concerned about his position on the "gang of eight" for intelligence issues.
