Why is California suing a school district?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
California on Monday sued the Chino Valley Unified School District, located 35 miles east of Los Angeles, over a policy that requires schools to notify parents within three days if their children change their gender identification or pronouns. Attorney General Rob Bonta is seeking a court order to immediately block the policy. Three other school districts in the region followed Chino in adopting similar policies.

Bonta said the "forced outing policy" is harmful because "for far too many transgender children and gender nonconforming youth, school serves as their only safe haven." The lawsuit argues the policy is discriminatory and violates the state constitution's promises of equal protection and privacy.

Chino Valley spokesperson Andi Johnston said that the policy does not harm students because it requires schools to notify social services or law enforcement if the student believes they are in danger or have been neglected. "In these circumstances," he said, "CVUSD staff will not notify parents or guardians."

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - No, Lahaina has been one of the driest parts of Maui for hundreds of years. In fact the rain shadow that exists here is part of the attraction of the community. A perfect storm of bureaucratic incompetence, a lack of infrastructure and grassland maintenance and mother nature was the culprit here. The incompetence and lack of emergency preparedness by tactical officers on the ground and local officials made this disaster far far worse than it should have been.

Yes - Of course nonnative grasslands and infrastructure mismanagement were the big issues. But the grasslands have been around for decades and what instigated the eve...
