Which drugs will Medicare negotiate prices for?

Source: Yahoo! Finance

  1. Summary
The White House on Tuesday named 10 commonly prescribed drugs that Medicare will be allowed to negotiate prices for. Medicare paid $50 billion for the drugs from June 2022 to May 2023 and Medicare patients paid $3.1 billion out-of-pocket for them last year. 9% of Medicare patients aged 65 or older reported skipping filling a prescription due to the cost in 2021.

The price negotiation was authorized by last year's Inflation Reduction Act and likely will not take effect for three years. Currently, pharmacy benefit managers that run Medicare prescription plans negotiate drug rebates, which can reduce premiums but typically do not directly impact prices at the counter. Going forward, the government will aim to find the lowest maximum fair price. Companies that do not negotiate will face heavy taxes.

Advocates say the policy will save the federal government billions while also lowering costs for patients. Critics say that it may incentivize companies to stop developing innovative drugs, particularly for rare conditions, as the research costs are offset by more common treatments.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - We want parents to be parents, not schools, fellow children, or the broader culture to be parents. A parent cannot guide their child through a very challenging situation if they don’t know it’s occurring. Concerns that parents may respond negatively and harm their child are valid and some exceptions should be allowed, but the default must be to tell parents when substantial events are taking place in their child’s life at school. In nearly all cases, parents are the best positioned and most committed to helping their child grow in a healthy way.

No - I sympathize with concerns over parental control or rights, that lead to wanting the requirement, but on balance believe that a school must be a safe haven for its studen...
