What are the politics of the impeachment trial of Texas' attorney general?

Source: Texas Tribune via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
On Tuesday the once-in-a-century impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, is set to begin. Paxton was impeached by the House in May and now faces the judgment of the state Senate. Paxton, who faces 20 counts of corruption, would need to be convicted of at least one count by a two-thirds Senate majority to lose office. 30 senators will vote in the trial, of whom 12 are Democrats.

Although both chambers of the legislature have GOP majorities, Paxton's impeachment reflects a divide between the formerly-dominant business wing of the party, which favors impeachment, and a rising populist right, which opposes it and has more influence in the Senate.

Impeachment managers allege that Paxton went to impeachable and potentially criminal lengths to cover up an affair. They claim Paxton abused his office to help a real estate investor's businesses in exchange for hiring Paxton's girlfriend, so that the two could secretly meet more easily. Paxton accuses the House of being overly influenced by the Democratic minority.

Should states cite the 14th Amendment to block Donald Trump from the ballot?

591 votes, 79 comments

Context: Growing discussion of theory that 14th Amendment disqualifies Trump from office.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I certainly think he qualifies under section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The relevant part states "...engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof" as being a disqualification for office. Trump has not been convicted of insurrection, but others have, and he has definitely given "aid and comfort" to them. I think that disqualifies him. Of course, this is all untraveled territory, as is so much concerning him.

No - This is dangerous for peace and undemocratic. The evidence Trump truly intended a coup is weak to begin with. But aside from that, blocking him from ...

Unsure - Not until there's a firm ruling. Otherwise the USA could follow the spiral...
