Why is Alabama appealing a ruling on its voting maps for the second time?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
On Tuesday a federal court ruled that Alabama's proposed congressional maps illegally dilute Black voters' representation and must be redrawn. The ruling is the second time the court has weighed in: it previously ruled Alabama's map was illegal in 2022. Alabama appealed the ruling, but the Supreme Court upheld the lower court's ruling in June of this year.

27% of Alabama's population is Black, but its current map has just one majority-Black district. The lower court previously ordered the creation of a second district that is either majority-Black or "quite close" to it. After the Supreme Court ruling, Alabama responded by creating a second district with a higher number of Black voters, but it fell short of a Black majority.

The lower court on Tuesday said it is "deeply troubled" that Alabama created a map that it "admits does not provide the remedy we said federal law requires." Rather than return the issue to the legislature, the court has ordered an appointee to draw a new map. Alabama will again appeal the ruling, meaning the Supreme Court could hear the case a second time.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Corrections is a tough field to recruit for, with a high turnover rate. It is thankless, dangerous on occasion, often boring until it is very exciting and frightening, depressing, and exposes COs to the worst society has to offer on a continual basis. Those that stay in it are mostly highly dedicated, but a lot of good people leave it because they get burned out, cynical, or realize they can make more elsewhere with less headaches. The problems mentioned here don't have easy solutions, and you can't rely on paying your way to achieving the recruiting and retention goals you need to meet (although that can help).
