How is the Biden administration trying to reduce drilling in the Arctic?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
The Department of the Interior on Wednesday issued a proposal to block oil drilling in about half of the land in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The reserve is the nation's largest expanse of public land, and has some of the richest oil reserves in the country. The protection does not apply to the Willow Project, a major oil project that President Biden approved in March despite criticism from progressives.

The department is also canceling seven leases approved by the Trump administration for oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Drilling had been banned in the refuge for decades until Congress in 2017 required the establishment of an oil and gas program there. The Interior Department suspended it in 2021 pending an environmental analysis.

State and local officials describe the moves as federal overreach. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, said the policy would have a chilling effect on future investment. The Interior Department says the Trump administration failed to properly evaluate the climate impact of the leases as required by law.

Do you support city laws that restrict Airbnb rentals?

342 votes, 51 comments

Context: New York City law goes into effect that Airbnb characterizes as a "de facto ban."

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Airbnb has massively increased rents and decreased inventory in the last 5 places I've lived. I'm sympathetic to owners' rights, and am an owner in an area where I could make a killing renting on Airbnb, but I don't want to turn my community into a vacation rental. Unfortunately, commoditizing every last thing has severe negative consequences and most individuals don't think in even mildly collective terms.

No - New York's law effectively ends a money stream for people who already did it right, but rented for a few days. I...

Unsure - For a private house where the landlord lives and uses the income to live, it is necessary. Restrictions of other types of rentals, esp...
