Write of Passage Weekly - You Too? I Thought I Was The Only One

Hey writers,

C.S. Lewis once said that “the typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, ‘What? You too? I thought I was the only one.'" And it's so true.

I’ll Venmo you $10 if you can name a better feeling than that: You too? I thought I was the only one.

You reference a book from your past that changed your life, and someone’s eyes widen: “Me, too!” You admit that you’re obsessed with an unusual hobby, like beekeeping or jiu-jitsu, and they laugh with excitement: “Me, too!” You share a dream that you have for your life, and they nod with conviction: “I thought I was the only one.”

Feeling seen is priceless (so don’t even think about trying to Venmo request me). 

But ask yourself, When was the last time you felt this? 

Do your coworkers even know who you are outside of office hours? Do you catch yourself fake-smiling your way through small talk?

If you’re honest with yourself, maybe you’ve outgrown the people around you. Maybe your environment is holding you back from becoming the person you know you can be. 

But it doesn’t have to be this way. 

Trust me, I was once where you are now. Unchallenged and uninspired by my peers, I had no one to talk to about my ideas. In fact, I was ridiculed for my ideas. 

My friends would say things like, “You’re going to write instead of go out with us?” 

“Umm…yeah.” 

Needless to say, it was awkward. It didn’t make me feel “cool.” More than once, it made me doubt what I was doing. 

But the Internet helped me find my people. It can help you find yours, too. And I want to show you how. 

Remember when having “Internet friends” was a laughable concept? It made you think of a gamer in their mom’s basement. But not anymore. The Internet has evolved into the best matchmaker on the planet. (How many weddings have you been to where the bride and groom met on a dating app?) New York, Melbourne, or Singapore — it doesn’t matter where you are. You can now meet co-founders, sign clients, and make lifelong friends by writing on the Internet.

Just look at these students who met in Write of Passage:

• Jonathan Hills and Zakk Fleischman launched Cabin.City, a global network of properties for remote workers.

• Hannah Frankman met her company’s principal investor in a Live Session breakout room.

• Ivy Xu sold her company to someone she met in the community forum.

Students in Write of Passage form exceptional bonds they would have never made otherwise. 

Our alumni are meeting in weekly writing groups to help each other publish. They're grabbing coffee with friends in their city. They're flying to in-person meet-ups. They’re inspiring, supporting, and challenging each other. 

I wish I'd had this community when I first started writing online. And this community is why I created Write of Passage in the first place.
