The Signal - We are back!
Hello reader, The Signal is back…on Substack. As you know, we shifted our base from Substack on May 1 to the publishing platform beehiiv. I know you might be wondering if something went wrong. Nothing really. As my cofounder Venkat Ananth had written to you at the time, we were in the early stages of planning our own app, which would have been the home for all our offerings. Although our product range has expanded, the app has taken a backseat for now. The Substack platform and app will be the anchor space for all our products, existing and planned. Meanwhile, the good folks at Substack have added numerous features as well as analytical and promotional tools, which were on our wishlist (psst: they say more features are on the way). Our Substack page will serve as the destination for our newsletters and podcasts. This decision has also been influenced in no small measure by the fact that several subscribers enjoyed reading The Signal on the Substack app and have told us so. TBH, some even deserted us because they preferred reading on an app. Yet, despite not publishing on Substack since May 1, a few people sign up on our page every day. Of course, we add them to our mailing list. We consider it more validation of the quality and appeal of our content. Thanks to your affection and patronage, dear reader, The Signal is going strong. The new products we launched over the past year—-The Playbook, written by my colleague Jaideep, whose keen eye rarely misses the business games being played beyond the playing field; The Impression, where Soumya subjects entertainers, content generators, and streamers to incisive dissection; our weekly podcast TechTonic Shift, in which my tech-savvy cofounder Rajneil Kamath and his tech-sceptic foil Roshni Nair spar over Apple’s strategy, artificial intelligence, self-driving vehicles, and everything tech—have taken off splendidly. Led by the redoubtable Shorbori Purkayastha and anchored by the talented Manaswini Tripathy, Farheen Khan, and the newest addition to the team, Anup Semwal, our daily podcast, The Signal Daily, is scaling up a hockey-stick curve. This smorgasbord will be now available in one place. Take your pick or picks. All of them are delectable, I promise. And we have more exciting projects lined up for you in the coming year. What do you have to do: Nothing! You will keep receiving all the products you had signed up for as usual in your email inboxes. You can choose to subscribe to all or only the ones you are interested in. Although it is unlikely (if you are our regular reader), please watch out for our emails landing in either your Spam or Promotions folder. It is something newsletters are susceptible to when switching platforms. If that happens, please take a moment and do the following: 1. Move The Signal from the “Promotions” or “Spam” tab to your “Primary” tab, if you have opted for Gmail’s default inbox view. 2. Select "Yes" on the popup that asks you whether to land all emails from The Signal in the inbox always. 3. Alternatively, you can also create a filter by heading to your search box on Gmail, click on “Show Search Options", and enter ‘thesignaldaily@substack.com’ in the ‘From’ button. Post that, you can create a filter by choosing ‘Primary’ in the ‘Categorise As’ option. Save the filter and you are good to go. In the rare case that the newsletter ends up in spam, we urge you to do the same— move us back to where we belong: your Inbox. You can also reply to us. Do let us know if the issue persists. If you are using other email clients, you should not face a problem. However, occasionally, apps such as Outlook could flag our email as junk, again as a function of a new domain name. In that rare event, mark us as “Not junk” and move us back to your inboxes. If you are an iCloud user (Apple Mail), we’d recommend marking our email as VIP, so that we show up every morning once again. Help us If you are here, we know we can count on you. Please share the newsletter with friends, or leave a comment. Join our Telegram group—The Signal Forum—where our users read, share, and chat about all that’s happening in business, tech, economy, policy, finance, and everything we cover in The Signal. We do not collect any information about you except your email ID. You could, however, help us know you better by participating in our annual survey by filling up this form. It will help us tweak our products and make them more enjoyable for you. As is our policy, you will remain anonymous. The last quarter of every year is liberally punctuated with celebrations and festivals all over the world. 2023 is also the year when the world fully came out of the dark shadow of the pandemic. We wish you a season filled with joie de vivre! Write to us at hello@thesignal.co for feedback, tips, and more. Dinesh Narayanan Did you enjoy today’s newsletter?
