Welcome to Issue No. 6!

I had a tough conversation with a client this week. They’d bought another newsletter a few months ago, with hopes that they could grow it into a big driver of revenue.

But a few months in, after lots of tinkering and testing, it became clear that things weren’t working. The new newsletter wasn’t growing, and it was losing money every month.

So they came to me with a question: Should they invest a little more into the newsletter and try to turn things around? Or should they move on?

To me, the answer was easy: It didn’t make sense to double down on something that wasn’t working. And it wasn’t just about the financial investment — any additional investment of time would drag them away from their flagship newsletter, which continues to grow and make money.

So they’ve decided to move on and refocus on their flagship newsletter. I give them credit for making the tough call. Sometimes, being willing to fold your cards and move on is the best move you can make.

Ask a Deliverability Expert: How Do I Get Off a Spamhaus Blocklist?

Here’s something we can all agree on: Nobody wants to see spam in their inbox.

Luckily, there are orgs like Spamhaus, which help identify, track, and block spam emails. They’re out there trying to keep your inbox free of spam.

And that’s great news for anyone who sends emails, like you or me. Spamhaus make sure spam goes to the spam folder, which gives your newsletter a better chance to stand out in the inbox.

But Spamhaus isn’t perfect. Sometimes, legitimate senders of email get blocked by Spamhaus, and when they do, it can cause serious issues for your email program. Many inbox providers use Spamhaus’ blocklists to help determine what should be let into the inbox and what should be blocked — so landing on a blocklist might mean that your emails never reach your audience.

What can you do if land on a Spamhaus blocklist? Luckily, Yanna-Torry Aspraki, who writes our Ask a Deliverability Expert column, has lots of experience dealing with Spamhaus. Here are her step-by-step instructions — you’ll want to save this guide in case you do ever run into a blocklist issue.
