Today we’re listening to Bernard Herrmann, an American composer and conductor from New York City. He studied at New York University and Juilliard, and joined CBS as a staff conductor, where he met and began collaborating with a young Orson Welles.¹ Herrmann’s first film score would be Citizen Kane, for which he received an Oscar nomination at age 30.² Later, he linked up with Alfred Hitchcock and scored seven of his films, composing for iconic scenes including the shower sequence from Psycho. Today we’re playing two of those Hitchcock scores: North By Northwest from 1959 and Vertigo from 1958. Herrmann brought a classically rigorous yet unmistakably original sound to the screen and influenced generations of film musicians to this day.
