We, Natasha and Sara, are the co-Executive Directors of Strategic Advocacy for Human Rights SAHR. Natasha is a Singaporean Muslim human rights lawyer who founded SAHR in 2008. At the time of SAHR's founding, she was a 18 year old law student, working with Afghan women lawyers to fashion gender-equitable interpretations of Islamic law to defend rape victims from being prosecuted in Afghan courts.
We met for the first time in person in Egypt in 2013, where Sara was working. We spent the summer in Cairo together, amidst a three-month national lockdown that had been imposed as a result of a coup d’etat. During that time, we laid the foundations for the important work, personal and structural, that led to the co-creation of the organization over the past decade. Today, SAHR has team members, volunteers, partners and advisors throughout the world and we work across multiple time zones, Natasha based in Singapore and Sara in Berlin.
Our dream is that by 2030, about 500 women and diverse leaders and human rights defenders around the world will have exercised direct responsibility in public decision-making processes and systems in their countries, with the goal of ending (SGBV). In order to achieve this, we run a yearly Fellowship program.
SAHR in Farsi and Arabic means ‘the first light that breaks the darkness, at dawn'. It signals awakening and hope for our common purpose: empowering women and diverse civil society leaders and human rights defenders around the world with the tools and knowledge to push for feminist, survivor-centered and intersectional approaches in the design and implementation of law and policies that end SGBV.
What kind of support are you most excited to receive at this point in your career?
Come learn about SAHR's piloting of the first accelerator program in the world, to incubate legal and policy interventions to end SGBV in the Global South on December 7! During the online event, we will host an intimate virtual fireside dialogue with some of the most brilliant human rights defenders around the world, as they navigate and influence the spaces of law and policy to end sexual and gender-based violence.
Lessons you're taking away from the first few years of your work experience, and applying to the next chapters of your career.
The work towards the protection of human rights may seem like a constant battle. One tip we have is: once in a while, consider whether there are pockets of collaboration, even micro-collaborations with your rivals. At times, it can be more important to build bridges with your rivals, than to be right.
Seek out a breadth of work experiences and develop a dynamic skill-set. When working in the non-profit space, be savvy in all sorts of skills from proposal writing to research, reporting writing, case management, donor relations, social media, advocacy, governance, financial management, communications – you name it!
The work in the non-profit space can be competitive and self-serving. Practice collective connectedness by uplifting others on your way up. Our real power is the connections we have with each other.
Read widely and develop a multidisciplinary curiosity. Your ability to extract concepts from other disciplines will give you a certain edge and technical added-value.
Strive for individual learning, self-reflection, relational self awareness and personal growth.
Be committed to the shared values of your co-leadership structure or your team, such as trust, respect and boundaries, but also vulnerability, empathy and closeness. Upholding these values together can yield concrete pathways to rethink, renegotiate and redistribute power.
ALÁRA is an incredible concept store in Lagos that collects and sells fashion and interior pieces from around the world. It's also a huge champion of Nigerian designers.
Adish is an Israeli-Palestinian brand combining contemporary styles with tatreez, a traditional Palestinian embroidery technique.
Kalchē Wine Co is a black- and queer-led regenerative winemaking cooperative, focused on diversity, sustainability and the decolonization of the wine industry.
Bismillah Babe is an Islam-inspired candle company based on its founder's wellness journey and reconnection with the rituals of religion.
Quouch is a homestay platform focused on queer people and women, for budget travelers who feel safer staying with hosts who share their identity and values.
Maryam Turkey is a young Iraqi designer/artist to watch – based in New York.
Muslim Sisterhood, which started as a London-based photography collective, is now a creative agency centered on Muslim women.
