Welcome bloomers, Moments of crisis, moments of urgency, demand we slow down so we might see more clearly through our hearts. In slowing down, we see there has never been a more important time to protect the blooming of humanity: we stand, and hope you will too, with the hearts of those demanding ceasefire to genocide:
"We mourn the victims of violence in Palestine and Israel. We listen to context and learn from history of genocide, apartheid, and occupation. We are witnessing all the trauma from colonialism, Islamophobia, and anti-semitism tearing up communities right now. We stand with all that are working towards the liberation from oppression everywhere. We demand a ceasefire in Gaza." – Closer Than You Think
"It is our collective responsibility to demand an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid, actively participate in demonstrations, and hold our governments accountable for their role in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. " – Young Feminist Solidarity "They do not want donations or fundraising now—that will come after the war. Now, the most urgent thing is to demand a ceasefire." – nöl collective
"The genocide unfolding in front of our eyes, might seem hopeless, but we have citizen power – decolonisation is not a metaphor, and we all have a role to play." – Shado Join us in calling for an immediate ceasefire to stop this humanitarian catastrophe and further loss of innocent lives. with love & light, Jasmine Did a friend forward you this email? What is your “official” professional role and field?
I’m currently in the last year of my PhD in Political Sociology at Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Italy, researching the use and impact of art as a tool of protest and social change. My ‘obsession’ with art is rooted both in an academic curiosity but also my own practical experience, having been a dancer for 15 years.
Aside from uni, I’m a member of the executive team and a podcast coordinator at Lazy Women: an international feminist platform and community of around 50 volunteer writers and illustrators, which aims to open taboo topics surrounding womanhood and challenge our society’s toxic relationship with hustle culture. We aim to make women’s labour visible and work towards a real revolution of the workspace: turning it into a caring, flexible and empowering environment in which we collectively strive to achieve a real societal change. We are actually running a crowdfunding campaign right now as a first step towards this goal. If interested, you can learn more about it here.
What if your unofficial role and field?
I’ve always been a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. A dancer, writer, researcher, sound editor and documentary filmmaker, community organiser, activist/artivist, and a project manager. At the same time, I’m also a relentless book lover, wine enthusiast and an art advocate with an undying passion to do my bit to make the world a more liveable place, while lifting others up to do the same.
What all of these have in common is an underlying feeling of personal responsibility to speak against injustices, dig deeper, and raise awareness on what’s going on, be it through making a documentary film about our university getting kicked out for political reasons, building a feminist community and creative hub for women from under-represented regions, recording podcasts about democratic backsliding, or amplifying voices of those who are silenced on social media. With the current state of the world, when unspeakable atrocities are happening right in front of our eyes but mostly come unpunished, I think it’s more important than ever for researchers, artists, and social impact workers to leave our Ivory Towers and try to make a real difference.
How did you get to where you are today in your career?
I would say out of sheer stubbornness. I grew up in an industrial and old mining town in the Czech Republic in a mostly working class family. Raised by a single mum, from quite an early age I felt an immense weight of personal responsibility to do something useful with my life and not to be a burden. I quickly turned into a workaholic, excelling at school, while trying to wind down at my dancing practice. If it wasn’t for money, I suppose I would have had a go at a dancing career but my ambitions in this field were immediately crushed by my family who was convinced that I would never make a living as an artist.
So I went into academia, rebelling against my family wishes to become a lawyer or a doctor and instead studied politics and international relations. I was desperate to understand the world, absorb in as much information as possible, and learn where I could be of use. My family was fairly apolitical – we rarely discussed historical events or the current political situation apart from the traditional ‘they are all corrupt anyway’ rhetoric, which is so common in my region. This approach felt simply too shallow for me, because I knew I could do more, I just needed to find the right outlet for it.
In fact, I’m the first person in my family who pursued an advanced university degree and also the only one who left my hometown. At the age of 18, I left for university, taking on a bunch of odd jobs to make my ends meet.
