For leaders, navigating the path toward optimal team engagement and retention can be challenging.

Author Joey Coleman, renowned for his expertise in customer retention and employee experience, delves into the heart of a common leadership struggle in his book "Never Lose An Employee Again." 

A pervasive sentiment among leaders is the longing for their team to share the same passion for the business as they do. So, why does this gap in perception persist, and how can leaders bridge it? 

Here are three key reasons why your team might not know you care as much as you actually do:

1. Lack of Understanding: Human nature dictates that we often view the world through our own lenses, focusing on our individual challenges and concerns. Employees, immersed in their own daily struggles, may not fully grasp the complexities of the employer-employee relationship. With most never having experienced the role of an employer, they lack the context to appreciate the hurdles and stresses that leaders navigate. To address this, leaders should proactively foster empathy by providing insights into the broader organizational context, helping team members appreciate the complexities of leadership roles.

2. Lack of Demonstrated Appreciation: Leaders frequently emphasize verbal expressions of care, but actions speak louder than words. Merely stating that you care about your team falls short if they do not witness tangible demonstrations of your commitment. A paycheck, while crucial, represents a contractual agreement. True appreciation lies in those moments when employees feel seen, heard, and valued in their interactions with the organization.

3. Lack of Connection: Visionary leaders, consumed by overarching goals and future plans, might inadvertently overlook the power of small, personal connections. The key is to slow down and actively seek out opportunities for meaningful interactions. By focusing on the details and recognizing the holistic magical moments that enhance the employee experience, leaders can bridge the gap between a wish for employer care and the realization that such care genuinely exists.

Our responsibility as leaders extends beyond verbal affirmations or fulfilling contractual obligations. To maximize employee retention and unleash the full possibilities of our teams, leaders should adopt a multifaceted approach to show, tell, and demonstrate care in ways that resonate personally and collectively. 

By addressing and improving these three dimensions, we as leaders can cultivate an environment where our team members not only understand but also genuinely feel the depth of our commitment to them — thus fostering a culture of deeper engagement, trust, buy-in and stay-in.
